David de Gea'signed a contract with Manchester United' before the club reneged on the agreement.
Manchester United are still negotiating a contract extension with David de Gea, who is set to become a free agent when his current contract ends on Friday.
David de Gea signed a contract extension with Manchester United, only for the club to back out, according to reports.
The Spanish goalkeeper is on the final week of his current £375,000-a-week contract, with United opting not to exercise a one-year extension clause last season. De Gea, 32, then entered talks with the Red Devils, who presented him with a revised proposition that included a significant wage cut.
According to The Athletic, the four-time United Player of the Year accepted their offer and even signed the contract, but club executives changed their minds and withdrew out. The Red Devils have now extended De Gea's contract with a lower pay. The 32-year-old has yet to sign it, which means he will become a free agent this Saturday, despite interest from Saudi Arabia.
The former Spain international would prefer to stay at Old Trafford and expand on his 12-year stint in Manchester, during which he has won eight championships. De Gea, on the other hand, has been told that he is not certain to be the club's first-choice goalkeeper next season.
This follows a string of failures near the close of the 2022-23 season that cost Ten Hag's team dearly. The Red Devils manager insisted throughout the disastrous run that he intended to keep De Gea, who has been at United since Sir Alex Ferguson recruited him to replace the long-serving Edwin van der Sar in 2011.
Ten Hag told The Times last month that he expects De Gea to stay at United: "Yes, but I won't say he'll always be my No.1 because in a club like Man United, there must be competition in all positions." It's not possible with 11 players. It is not possible. You require two positions."
Even after one of De Gea's worst games, a 1-0 loss to West Ham, the Dutch manager stuck by him. "He has the most clean sheets in the league, so we would not be here in this position without him," Ten Hag said after the game.
"He has my complete trust." He has no worries. It happens, but as a team, you must deal with it, demonstrate character, be resilient, and recover. We want him to stay and have his contract extended."
Back in February, De Gea stated that he was confident about his future, saying, "We're still talking." I'm just concentrating on the game, that's the most important thing, but I'm sure it'll end well."
