Real Madrid full back on his way out of Real Madrid for good

Álvaro Odriozola is set to depart from Real Madrid this summer, as both the player and the club agree that it is in their best interests. Odriozola had limited playing time under coach Ancelotti last season, featuring for only 92 minutes throughout the entire campaign. With little prospect of increased first-team opportunities in the upcoming season, it has been mutually acknowledged that Odriozola should seek a new club.

Real Madrid currently has right-back positions covered by Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vázquez, leaving Odriozola surplus to requirements. As he has only one year remaining on his contract, Madrid is open to entertaining offers for the Basque full-back. Importantly, Odriozola himself recognizes the situation and agrees that it is time to move on. Another season spent on the bench is not an option for him, considering his minimal playing time during the 2022/23 season. He made brief substitute appearances in La Liga and the Copa del Rey but never completed a full match in the 61 games Madrid played. Only Jesús Vallejo had fewer minutes on the pitch than Odriozola.

The main challenge for Odriozola and Real Madrid at present is the absence of concrete offers. This is not to say that there is no interest in the player. His former club, Real Sociedad, where he had successful seasons before joining Madrid, has been closely monitoring his situation and may consider bringing him back. Returning to his hometown holds significant appeal for Odriozola, both for personal reasons and the opportunity to play in the Champions League. However, as of now, Real Sociedad has not made any official offers. Athletic Club, the regional rivals of Real Sociedad, also have an interest in the player. Furthermore, Juventus, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, sees Odriozola as a worthwhile investment due to his previous experience in Serie A during a loan spell with Fiorentina, where he played 27 games.

Real Madrid has already concluded most of their transfer business early in the summer, with only Odriozola's departure remaining unresolved. The urgency is not high, given that it is still June, and there is ample time to find a suitable solution for the player. Both Odriozola and the club are optimistic that offers will begin to materialize, and a satisfactory outcome will be reached. In contrast to the situation with goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, where finding a suitable replacement was more pressing, Madrid now has no need to rush the resolution of Odriozola's future. The club and the player hope for a smoother and less stressful process in determining the best next step for Odriozola's career.
