After accepting a compromise from Chelsea, Manchester United finally agreed to sign Mason Mount.
Manchester United's long-running chase of Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount appears to be ended after the two Premier League clubs agreed on a deal.
Manchester United and Chelsea have reached a deal to sign midfielder Mason Mount.
The 24-year-old England midfielder will join United on a five-year agreement worth Ł55 million, with the option to increase to Ł60 million in add-ons. Mount has been granted permission by the Blues to undertake a medical at Old Trafford and finalize personal terms.
Negotiations appeared to have stagnated last month after United had three distinct proposals rejected. Indeed, manager Erik ten Hag was said to be shifting his focus to other targets after becoming unhappy with Chelsea's insistence on only accepting Ł58 million - plus a further Ł7 million in add-ons.
However, the two Premier League clubs have finally reached an agreement. It means the Red Devils are likely to make their first signing of the summer, in what is expected to be a busy transfer season.
And, with Mauricio Pochettino in the midst of his own transformation at Stamford Bridge, a deal that suited both parties was eventually reached after Mount indicated he did not wish to extend his current contract. That contract expires in 2024, so the Blues would have risked losing him for free in a year.
Mount, who was a member of England's World Cup team in Qatar before being dropped for the recent Euro 2024 qualifiers, came via the Chelsea system and will leave after 18 years with the London club. He appeared in 195 senior games and scored 33 goals.
Many Chelsea fans were dissatisfied with the apparent rift between Mount and the club, despite Mount's importance to the club's 2020/21 Champions League victory. However, once Thomas Tuchel left, he struggled to find a regular role this season under Graham Potter and subsequently interim manager Frank Lampard.
Ten Hag is determined to bolster his midfield section, as both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are approaching the end of their careers. Injury affected the Dane's 2022/23 season as well, as he struggled to make an impression despite returning late in the season.
The Dutch manager's attention will now shift to bringing in a big-name striker to supplement Mount and co. The club has been connected to their new star's international teammate Harry Kane, and would have been made aware of Bayern Munich's interest in Tottenham's record scorer earlier this week.
