Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has lost a key member of his coaching staff following the club's historic treble triumph, with Rodolfo Borrell set to join the MLS.
The Eastlands club's 2023 season became immortal after they became the first English team to equal Manchester United's 1999 feat when they won the Champions League in Istanbul to complete the treble in 1999. The accomplishment, however, will be the final dance for the Spanish coaching tandem, as assistant Borrell has decided to go it alone, taking a new position with Austin FC.
The dependable coach had been an integral part of the Cityzens' business for the previous nine years, having joined from Liverpool and working as academy technical director before to Guardiola's arrival. After two years in his position, he was promoted to first-team assistant in 2016.
From there, Borrell has been a mainstay in the dugout, guiding the team to five Premier League crowns in seven attempts, as well as two FA Cups before achieving the holy grail of the Champions League this year. The 1-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League final in Turkey will now be remembered as the final encounter of what has been a wonderful collaboration.
The 52-year-old coach will now head to Major League Soccer, where he will be the first sporting director in his storied and diversified career. Surprisingly, Borrell has only managed at the senior level once in his career, at Greek club Iraklis in 2008, after being promoted from his assistant position.
The former La Masia coach, who has worked at a number of European powerhouses, is expected to replace ex-Manchester City, Sunderland, and Rangers midfielder Claudio Reyna in Texas. In January, the 112-time USMNT international quit his position with Austin FC to become the franchise's technical advisor.
Borrell will now be entrusted with providing his knowledge in America as his new club attempts to reach the MLS Cup final series in the second half of the season. Los Verdes is currently in eighth place in the Western Conference rankings, therefore this would be enough to guarantee a playoff spot.
Following last season's historic success, it appears that some change is afoot at Etihad Stadium this summer, with the Spaniard the latest crucial figure to leave Guardiola's coaching staff. His departure follows that of Enzo Maresca, who coached at Manchester City last season and has since taken over as Leicester City's new head coach.
