Erik ten Hag's attitude on Mason Greenwood keeps the door open for a Manchester United role.

Mason Greenwood hasn't featured in the Premier League for Manchester United in 17 months, but he still has two years left on his contract.

Erik ten Hag is thinking about loaning Mason Greenwood out, but he doesn't want to sell the Manchester United striker.

Greenwood, 21, hasn't played for United since January 2022, when a lady accused him of physical and sexual abuse. He remains ineligible for selection while the club conducts an internal inquiry. He was arrested and was scheduled to stand trial when the Crown Prosecution Service withdrew all allegations in February.

Greenwood's current contract has two years left on it, with United having the option to extend it for another year. The Englishman is said to be anxious to return to Premier League action and was recently seen completing a one-on-one training session in public.

Despite the fact that the charges have been dropped, United will risk reaction from certain fans if Ten Hag reintegrates Greenwood into his squad. It's uncertain whether another team would be interested in loaning or signing the player permanently.

United has been debating Greenwood's future for the past four months. If United terminates his contract, they may be obliged to pay millions of dollars in compensation. He is also still considered as one of England's top young footballers.

Greenwood has 35 goals in 130 United appearances and was voted the club's Young Player of the Year in 2019. In addition, the one-cap international was nominated for the Golden Boy award in 2021 as one of Europe's top 20 best young footballers.

The Manchester Evening News reports that United will make a decision on Greenwood's future very soon, with pre-season beginning on Monday. Ten Hag is said to be considering loaning Greenwood out rather than terminat

During an interview with The Times last month, Ten Hag stated that Greenwood has "shown in the past that he is capable of doing that [scoring goals]." However, this selection will not be based on the youngster's football abilities.

Ten Hag also indicated in that interview that the choice on Greenwood's future did not rest with him. He will only be engaged in the decision-making process if United's hierarchy allows him to continue his career at Old Trafford, which is why the loan chatter exists.
