Barcelona president confirms £86 million bid for Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong amid renewed interest
Manchester United pursued Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong during the summer transfer season, and interest is expected to increase in the next year as the Red Devils rebuild.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has admitted that the Spanish club got a huge offer for Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong last summer - and that new bids have been tabled.
The Red Devils were heavily linked with a deal for the Dutch midfielder as Erik ten Hag sought to bolster his options in the midfield at Old Trafford. He was listed as a prime target, and it was rumored that Barcelona were willing to sell due to the Camp Nou's severe financial condition.
Finally, the three parties were unable to reach an agreement. United was thus obliged to seek new recruits elsewhere.
They eventually signed Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who came to Old Trafford for £60 million from Real Madrid. He had a strong first season as a Red Devil.
However, De Jong's future remains unknown. Following last summer's massive offer, President Laporta has acknowledged that he has received new proposals for the former Ajax star.
He has, however, ruled out a sale and fully expects De Jong to play a role in Barcelona's LaLiga title defense next season. "Last year it happened, and we were worse," he said TV3. We received an offer of €100 million (£86 million) for De Jong and were correct not to accept it.
"We've had offers for Pedri, Ansu Fati, Christensen, de Jong, and Araujo, but we believe they must stay." They are the club's present and future."
De Jong recently spoke up about last summer's issue, confirming that staying at Camp Nou was always his intention. "That [staying] has been clear to me, also last summer when things were restless for a while," he told Voetbal International.
"I've always known I wanted to live in Barcelona. That's why last summer wasn't as tough for me."
"I had also just signed a contract extension [in 2020], so I always felt in control and able to make my own decisions." He went on to say. "That's why I didn't bother [concerning it]." I'm enjoying my time in Barcelona and expect to be back next season."
Meanwhile, De Jong stated that his relationship with Laporta had not eroded as a result of the transfer issue last season. "My relationship with the president is good," the midfielder stated. In actuality, it has never been a negative situation. Of fact, this happened last summer, but my connection with him is fine."
De Jong appeared in 43 games for Barcelona last season and scored twice as the club won LaLiga.
