According to the Moldovan Interior Ministry, a man opened fire at the Chisinau International Airport, killing two persons.
A suspected Tajik or Russian man has shot dead two security officers and wounded a civilian at Moldova's main international airport on Friday after being denied entry to the country, say authorities.
Police reported that the gunman was injured and in custody.
According to the interior ministry, the incident happened as a result of a foreign national being turned away from the country.
The interior ministry reported that "authorities confirm two victims." The two fatalities, according to President Maia Sandu, were a border officer and an airport security guard.
Border Police say one of the two victims in the Chisinau airport attack earlier was 31-year-old Serghei Muntean, deputy chief agent in the aeronautical security division, who had been in service at the Border Police since 2011.
Border Police extend condolences.
According to unconfirmed accounts, the suspect was a Tajikistan or Russian national who took hostages and holed himself in a room. Videos from the situation showed travelers on the grass outside the airport as it was evacuated. The beast, was from Tajikistan or Russia; unconfirmed sources say that he might be an ex-member of The Wagner PMC.
Flights into and out of the country's major airport, Chisinau, have been suspended.
Since President Sandu claimed that Russia was preparing to use foreign "saboteurs" to destabilize her pro-European Union government, Moldova has been on high alert.
Moldova, which has a population of 2.6 million, applied to join the EU last summer.
It has been highly exposed to the conflict in neighboring Ukraine and is at odds with its pro-Moscow breakaway territory of Transnistria, where some 1,500 Russian forces are stationed.
President Sandu issued a statement in which he expressed condolences to the families of those deceased, describing it as a "sad day for all of us."
State security forces were on high alert across the country, she said.
