Mesut Ozil derails Arsenal's next move for a "world star" amid Barcelona transfer talks
Arsenal are ready to sign Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber, with more signings expected, but former Gunners star Mesut Ozil may have thrown a ball in the works on a deal for Arda Guler.
Arsenal has had a terrific transfer window thus far, but former Gunners star Mesut Ozil may have jeopardized the next big move.
Kai Havertz has already joined the North London club in a £65 million deal from Chelsea. Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber are expected to join him at the Emirates Stadium after leaving West Ham and Ajax, respectively.
Arda Guler, a Fenerbahce teenager, has also been linked with a move. The 18-year-old has starred for the Turkish giants in recent seasons, with his performances attracting a lot of attention.
Arsenal have been watching Guler, dubbed the "Turkish Messi," for some time, while Spanish giants Barcelona are also said to be interested. Despite the possibility of a major move, Ozil has attempted to interfere.
According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the German has given Guler some career advise. It is stated that Ozil has advised him to remain with Fenerbahce for the time being in order to further his growth.
He is said to have advised the child to prioritize his gaming time at this point. It's not the first time Ozil has mentioned Guler's potential.
Barcelona chairman Joan Laporta has already stated that the Catalans have initiated talks about a move for Guler, while the club's new sporting director Deco has been to Istanbul for talks.
"He is a very young player, it is true that our scouts have been following him for a long time, and many big clubs in Europe want him," he told Mundo Deportivo. We're in contact with Fenerbahce."
Guler would be coming off the most productive season of his career if he pursued a trade. Last season, he appeared in 35 games across all competitions, scoring six goals and assisting on seven others.
