Jurgen Klopp receives transfer advice for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is "better than Declan Rice."
In June's internationals against Malta and North Macedonia, England manager Gareth Southgate used Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold as a center midfielder.
Dean Saunders, a former Liverpool striker, feels Trent Alexander-Arnold is already England's best midfielder, saying "he can do everything Declan Rice does."
Alexander-Arnold, 24, is a right-back by trade and has had considerable success in that position, having been chosen to UEFA's Team of the Year in 2019 and FIFA's FIFPro World11 in 2020. Despite this, the England international was chastised last season as Liverpool faltered.
Jurgen Klopp's team finished sixth in the Premier League, and Alexander-Arnold's defensive abilities were questioned. When Liverpool gets possession, Klopp has pushed the player into center midfield. When the Reds are defending, he switches back to right-back.
The role change allowed Alexander-Arnold to make seven assists in the final ten games of the season, as Liverpool went unbeaten in a late top-four drive. Saunders believes Klopp should make Alexander-Arnold a full-time midfielder.
Saunders, who spent the 1991/92 season at Anfield, has encouraged Klopp to forego acquiring another midfielder in favor of bringing in a right-back. This summer, the Reds have already signed two midfielders, Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
"I think Trent is the best English midfield player in England - I think he's better than all of them," Saunders told talkSPORT. If you play him in midfield, he can do everything Declan Rice does, but he can also hit passes Thiago hits.
"When you play in the middle of midfield, you need to have wing mirrors on because you're facing the other way with your back to goal." I believe he is capable of doing both. "I believe Klopp will eventually play Trent in the middle of the field."
Rice is on the verge of becoming the most expensive English footballer of all time, according to Saunders. The West Ham captain will join Arsenal for Ł105 million, surpassing Jack Grealish's Ł100 million move to Manchester City two years ago.
