Steven Gerrard is likely to return to management in Saudi Arabia as talks resume.
Steven Gerrard is on the verge of being hired manager of Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq, less than nine months after being fired as Aston Villa manager.
Steven Gerrard is likely to take over as manager of Al Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.
Gerrard, 43, has been out of the game since his dismissal from Aston Villa in October 2022. The ex-Liverpool player was fired following Villa's 3-0 defeat at Fulham, which dropped the West Midlands club to 17th place with two wins from their first 11 Premier League games.
Gerrard has been a pundit on Channel 4's coverage of England since his departure and was present at both of England's Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Italy and Ukraine in March. Gerrard was also present during the Three Lions' 7-0 thrashing of North Macedonia.
In early June, Gerrard's management future was extensively linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, the potential deal began to cool as Gerrard was unsure whether he wanted to make the swap. He had also emerged as the frontrunner for the vacant Sheffield Wednesday post following the dismissal of Darren Moore.
On June 19, Gerrard said of his future, "A lot has been said in the media, a lot of it is not true." I was invited over to look at a potential offer, which I did and have been analyzing for the past few days. But, as things stand, I'm not going to accept that offer."
Gerrard, on the other hand, has made a U-turn and is now ready to take over at Al Ettifaq, who finished seventh in the Saudi Pro League last season. He will join a slew of big-name footballers in making the move to the Middle East this summer.
Among those who have joined the Saudi Pro League revolution are Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante, Ruben Neves, Edouard Mendy, and Kalidou Koulibaly, six months after Cristiano Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr. Nuno Espirito Santo is undoubtedly the most visible manager in Saudi Arabia right now.
