The offside rule may undergo another big revision as FIFA considers Arsene Wenger's proposal.
Arsene Wenger has pushed a new offside rule modification that could forever revolutionize football, with the adjustment due to be tested in the Netherlands, Italy, and Sweden.
FIFA is on the verge of making another significant alteration to the offside rule.
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger proposed the change, having left the Gunners in 2018. Wenger has been working as FIFA's Chief of Global Football Development for the previous four years. He wants to change the regulation once more, this time by modifying the part of the body is used to determine offside.
A player is currently offside when they are in the opponents' half and, when the ball is played, any part of their body is closer to the opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent.
Because one of those two opponents is almost always the goalkeeper, the player is normally offside if either the ball or one of the outfield opponents is not between the player and the goal line.
FIFA, on the other hand, is planning to change the offside rule. Wenger's suggestion will change it to include the entire goal-scoring body of the player. This means that the attacker will remain onside if any part of his body is behind the last defender.
Unquestionably, the news will elate attackers, who will now have a significant edge when looking to make runs off the backs of opponents. A striker would naturally balance themselves in a forward motion with their arms ahead to point where they intend to run - a much better posture than a defender who must watch the ball as well as follow their run.
The rule change is already gaining followers on social media.
"If this change is implemented, it will revolutionize football," one person said. High lines will now be punished more frequently. Catenaccio will return."
