The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), according to Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), sought to pay James Gyakye Quayson, the incoming member of parliament for Assin North, not to run in the by-election.

He stated that Quayson was unwavering in his dedication to and love for his constituency and that the administration had threatened to send him to jail for refusing to step down.

Sammy Gyamfi praised Gyakye Quayson's commitment to fighting for justice no matter what the cost, even at the risk of losing his civil liberties, in a Facebook post.

Folks, not much has been said about the relentlessness of the MP elect for Assin North, without which victory may have eluded us.

They tried to bribe him to back off. When they failed, they threatened him with jail. But in all these things, he was unwavering in his commitment and love for his people.

Always calm but confident; humble but courageous; sober but inspiring; meek but fearless.

His personal conviction and determination to fight for justice against all odds, even at the risk of losing his civil liberties, is the reason we are smiling today.

Join me celebrate the First Gentleman of the good people of Assin North, the Old Soldier, Hon. James Gyakye Quayson.

His victory contradicted a number of election-related forecasts that were negative about how he would perform.

Quayson received 17,245 votes, or 57.56 percent of the total votes cast, defeating Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who received 12,630 votes, or 42.15 percent.

Bernice Enyonam Sefenu, a third-place finisher from the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), received 87 votes, or 0.29 percent, of the total cast.

In the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections, Quayson won the seat with 17,498 votes, or 55.21 percent, defeating the incumbent, Abena Durowaa Mensah, who received 14,193 votes, or 44.79 percent.
