Johnny Osei Kofi, a former deputy chief of staff, is urging the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer to think about choosing an Ashanti Region running mate.
He asserted that John Mahama's selection of a local candidate will make it simpler for the party to gain more support in that area.
"I am arguing, and others are saying, that we have much to gain if we chose an Asante as the battleground and persuade indigenous people to lead the charge.
"Those other folks are not Ashantis or even residents of the Ashanti Region. I want to be clear that this is a strategic issue .
Speaking on the Pulse on JoyNews, he noted that since many young people in that region had lost faith in the incumbent party, it would be wise and strategic for Mahama to choose a running partner from their area.
There are many young people in this region who often express a desire to vote for the NDC in the upcoming election. However, he questioned, "Who is to rally them? Who is to urge them?
He emphasized, "That is why I think we have to make Ashanti Region the second headquarters of the NDC and work towards the 2024 election."
In response, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a political scientist, says Mr. Mahama does not have to accept the notion that only someone from the Ashanti area could inspire the populace to give the party the political mandate.
My issue is: Who would be in charge of guiding them if John Mahama decided not to choose somebody from the Ashanti Region? That is not the case, in my opinion," he stated.
Dr. Asah-Asante continued by saying that whoever is chosen to serve as the party's representative will be charged with the duty of "gingering" people in all regions to cast votes for the party.
The most crucial component, he emphasized, was a running mate "who will bring a lot to the table .
