According to reports, former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has earned £4.2m from his image rights.

The 31-year-old former England international, who was released in June, joined United from Blackburn in 2011 for £16m.

He had a promising first season under Sir Alex Ferguson but after signing a four-and-a-half year contract in February 2019, he only started 16 times due to a number of injury problems.

For credit, Jones worked tirelessly to get in the best shape possible before Erik Ten Hag arrived.

But a nagging problem with his knee has hindered any progress and the former England international has made no appearances for the 2022/23 campaign. Despite having rarely played for the first team in recent years, Jones still earns millions of dollars from his weekly wages at Old Trafford.

In fact, the Daily Mail suggests that the defender, now a free agent, has recouped £4.2m from his image rights.

Paul Pogba, his former United team-mate, is believed to have acquired a British image rights company with assets worth £5m, including £2.4m in cash.

The report also states that Anthony Martial withdrew £8m from his image rights after moving to the Premier League club in 2015.

In May, Jones opened up about leaving Old Trafford in an emotional final interview. Advertisement

Speaking at the club's training ground, he said:

"The past two years have been very difficult. There's no denying it. It's impossible to hide. My family has been absolutely essential in keeping me on track and keeping me focused, in trying. Get in shape and try to play more.

"And, you know, I miss playing football. I remember it. You grew up playing football and all you want to do is play football. That's all I knew, since I was a kid, to do what you love to do in life. I've had the opportunity to do that, but not as much as I would have liked."

"I worked tirelessly. I really didn't miss anything. I've been trying to get back as quickly as possible every time I've been away for the past two years. I think the highlight for me should be the game against Wolves [his return from last season's injury], when I come back.

"It was just a moment I'll never forget. It gives me goosebumps thinking about it now. I mean, I worked really hard to get to this fitness level. "It was a huge, huge moment in my career and the fans that day were amazing. The love they gave me for this game, the passion they showed, was amazing. And I can't thank them enough for that. They have been a constant support during my stay here.
