Accidents have claimed 95% of lives this year alone in Accra and other parts of the country, and many of them have also sustained life-threatening injuries. It seems like nothing is happening about raising awareness for drivers to take urgent measures to prevent these preventable accidents on our roads. A lot can be attributed to overspeeding, wrong overtaking, overusing second-hand tires, and many other factors.
According to sources from the Citi News, commuters traveling from Kasoa, a suburb of Accra, have sustained various degrees of injuries through accidents. About eight passengers, including a Senior High School student, suffered injuries of varying degrees in an accident on the Kasoa-Malam highway Wednesday morning.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the Sprinter bus, with registration number GR 6669-13, lost control of the steering wheel. This was after another vehicle crossed his path while merging into the lane.
This caused the bus to spin and summersaulted. Passersby rescued the injured passengers, who were taken to nearby health facilities for medical treatment. Upon questioning by the police at the scene, it was revealed that the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident did not possess the required license to operate the vehicle. According to the police, most of these accidents are caused by drivers without a license or adequate training.
Instead of holding a class C license, the driver only had a class B license.
“I traveled to Madina, but on our way, our driver was careless. Another car switched lanes, and I don’t know what happened; the vehicle crashed. It wasn’t a serious thing, but the driver caused the vehicle to fall," Akwesi Acquah told Citi News.
“I thank God I am alive because what happened was serious. Many people sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the hospital,” Maame Akua Amoah said.
The passenger car driver was later taken to the police station while the vehicle was towed.
