PSG issues transfer deadline to Kylian Mbappe after Real Madrid interest

Paris Saint-Germain has called Kylian Mbappe's bluff by imposing a deadline for signing a new deal after the striker made his intentions plain in a letter.

Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to play hardball with Kylian Mbappe in order to resolve his future with the club.

Mbappe stunned PSG in June when he informed the club that he would not be triggering a one-year contract extension. His declaration basically informed his employers that he would be leaving on a free transfer in June 2024.

PSG's objective, as Mirror Football reported at the time, is to guarantee he does not leave without a transfer price, implying that they are willing to cash in on the superstar this summer. Real Madrid has already attempted to get Mbappe and would be the most probable suitors if PSG were to sell.

The high stakes poker game has taken an unexpected turn, with the Parisian club making the first move. According to L'Equipe, PSG has given Mbappe until the end of July to extend his contract or he would be sold.

The summer transfer window is open until September 1, giving Mbappe plenty of time to leave PSG. Real Madrid have signed Joselu as a low-cost replacement for Karim Benzema, who left the club to join Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad, and club president Florentino Perez has stated that no further acquisitions are planned.

Financial Fair Play regulations and LaLiga's crackdown on Barcelona's extravagant spending imply that a deal for Mbappe would be difficult for Real to accomplish. On deadline day in September 2021, the Spanish giants offered €200 million (£171.7 million) for the French striker, but a similar deal currently appears doubtful.

Mbappe claimed in June, after his letter to PSG was released to the press, that he is still dedicated to the club. "I've already stated that my goal is to stay at PSG; it's my only option right now, and I'm ready to return for pre-season."

"Why should I extend my contract? "There is nothing to explain; people can talk," he declared before a Euro 2024 qualifier.

"They don't know everything, too bad for them; I know why I'm doing this, and there's no problem with that." Is it true that I hesitated to attend [the news conference]? No way, I have a responsibility, and a few outside noises will not keep me from doing it.

"It was critical that I be here today. I've become accustomed to it since I was a child. I'm thinking about the game tomorrow. That is my sole focus. What happens outside is incidental; I've always been able to accomplish both. I want to demonstrate tomorrow that I'm a fantastic player."

Lionel Messi has already left PSG for Inter Miami, but Neymar's future at the club is still unknown.
