Since November 16, 2020, former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has reported that he has been subjected to threats of assassination, armed robbery, and the burning down of his residence.
According to him, the discussions to assassinate him were halted by the late Victor Newman, who served as Director of Research at the Presidency.
He asserted that President Nana Akufo-Addo's covert operatives and agents were sent to his home at 2:15 a.m. on July 3, 2023, because he was protecting people whose constitutional rights to personal liberty were being infringed upon by their surrogates. He said this happened because he defended people whose constitutional rights to personal liberty were being trampled upon by their surrogates.
"These threats intensify any time I exercise my right to defend the Constitution just as I did recently on 28 June 2023 and 30 June 2023 resulting in a covert attack on my residence at 2:15 am, dawn yesterday, Monday 3 July 2023," he said. "These threats intensify any time I exercise my right to defend the Constitution just as I did recently on 28 June 2023 and 30 June 2023."
The former Attorney General made the revelation in a statement in response to an order issued by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) instructing its communicators not to attack the Dormaahene on his views on the trial of Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson. The directive was issued in response to the former Attorney General's statement.
A piece of the statement said, "The distinguished and eminent chief of the Dormaas is lucky that the communicators attacked only his personality on air and their superiors have seen the danger it poses for the NPP in the 2024 elections,"
Mr. Amidu stated that he will not back down from defending the Constitution of 1992, which is something he is required to do as a citizen of Ghana.
He gave the advice that "no Ghanaian patriot must allow themselves to be intimidated by the threats of those who are violating the Constitution."
Having said that, he went on to say, "As I said in November 2020, the President, Nana Akufo-Addo is ultimately responsible for anything violent that befalls me or my residence."
The complete statement is as follows:
It is time for Nana Akufo-Addo to stop allowing his thugs to intimidate citizens who are exercising their right to free speech: MARTIN A. B. K. AMIDU
Was it yesterday that I read on Ghana Web a report that the communication directorate of the New Patriotic Party told their communicators that they should not attack the personality of the chief, even though they disagreed with his call for the president to intervene or interfere with the independent work of the judiciary?
The respected and eminent chief of the Dormaas is extremely fortunate that the communicators attacked solely his personality on television, as their superiors have recognized the threat that this situation poses to the NPP in the elections that will take place in 2024.
In my situation, undercover operatives and agents working for Nana Akufo-Addo were sent to my house at 2:15 in the am on Monday, July 3, 2023, for stating the same thing and protecting people whose constitutional rights to personal liberty are being trampled upon by their surrogates. They did this because I had said that Nana Akufo-Addo's surrogates were violating people's constitutional rights to personal liberty.
Since the 16th of November 2020, I have been forced to live in constant fear that this regime will kill me, rob me while I'm armed, and set fire to my home.
The late Victor Newman put an end to the plot to kill me back then by calling off the meetings.
These threats get worse every time I exercise my freedom to defend the Constitution, as I did most recently on June 28 and June 30, 2023, which resulted in a sneak attack on my residence at 2:15 in the morning on July 3, 2023, the day after yesterday.
The President, Nana Akufo-Addo, is ultimately liable for anything violent that happens to me or my residence, as I stated back in November 2020.
As a Ghanaian citizen, it is required of me to protect the Constitution of 1992, and I do not intend to back down from this obligation. The threats made by those who are breaching the Constitution should not be able to intimidate any Ghanaian nationalist.
If something happens to me, put the blame on Akufo-Addo, Amidu says, as he warns the government to "stop the attacks before we wash dirty linen in public."
In the year 202, Mr. Amidu stated that President Nana Akufo-Addo should be held responsible for any harm that came to him, including his death.
According to him, ever since he left government in connection with his corruption and anti-corruption risk assessment study on the contentious Agyapa Royalties sale, he has been the object of threats of physical violence. He claims that these threats have been made against him.
Mr. Amidu, who resigned from his position as the Special Prosecutor on Monday, November 16, 2020, gave an audio warning to the administration of Akufo-Addo, stating that if the attacks against him do not stop, he will be forced to come out and defend his integrity "without fear or favor" and damn the consequences. Mr. Amidu resigned from his position as the Special Prosecutor on Monday, November 16, 2020.
"Please, I have stated since I have left office that I am not going to give any fresh interviews regarding my resignation, and that I am not going to talk to the press. I would appreciate it if you would honor that request. In an exclusive interview that took place on November 19, 2020 with Citi FM's Umaru Amadu Sanda, Mr. Amidu issued the following warning: "I am being pushed by so-called responses to me, which contain blatant falsehoods, to speak but I do not want anybody to blame me when I speak out and it becomes unpalatable."
"There are two options here: either the attacks will stop or I will defend my honor, even if it means risking my life." "It is something I won by dint of hard work from the PNDC to date and I'm not going to allow anybody, not even the president, to pull that integrity into the mud," the former Attorney General added. "It is something I won by dint of hard work from the PNDC to date."
The Citizen Vigilante stated, "I am a poor man who tries to lead a straight and narrow life and crusaded against corruption without asking for payment, so, they will try to destroy me." The Citizen Vigilante went on to say, "Anyone who tries to fight corruption must be aware from the beginning that corruption will fight back, and all that is going on is corruption fighting back."
According to him, "it is demonstrating that the whole rhetoric about fighting corruption was merely rhetoric"
"Now is the time to settle accounts, and no one should try to pressure me. Mr. Amidu issued the following warning once more: "I repeat: nobody should push me."
He said, "They should tell their people, who they wrongly briefed to be telling lies about me, to stop before I decide to respond, and when I decide to respond, I'll do so without fear or favor, even to the extent that if my life will be taken for speaking the truth and defending the Constitution of Ghana, as by law established, I'll do so without fear or favor." He was referring to the fact that they had wrongly briefed their people to lie about him.
Mr. Amidu emphasized that as a private citizen, "nobody can control me, and I have a constitutional right too, to defend myself and the Constitution of Ghana, as by law established." He went on to say that "corruption and corruption-related offenses are forbidden by the Constitution, and assessment of anti-corruption is something allowed under the Constitution and must not be subdued under personal attacks."
He stressed that "It Must Stop" (It Must Cease).
Mr. Amidu stated that his enemies and critics must be aware of the fact that he is a "Citizen Vigilante."
"That is what they need to keep in mind," she continued, adding, "I'm aware of all these threats about bugging me, armed robbery, and burning down my house."
According to him, despite his multiple attempts, he was unable to have a conversation with the Minister of National Security, Mr. Albert Kan Dapaah, about the threats that were made against him.
"I tried to call Kan Dapaah, but he didn't pick up the phone, so I got a former national security advisor to call him and tell him that, and I know the persons involved, and I can name them, but I reserve it for the meantime," he said. "I know the persons involved, and I can name them, but I reserve it for the meantime."
Mr. Amidu is making an allegation against the president, saying, "I put my life for the republic of Ghana, and the president will be responsible for anything that happens to me."
He claimed that he has been the target of several threats, including those of armed robbery and arson. "The intelligence is there, and I called the minister of national security, but he didn't pick. And then I got a former national security advisor to speak to him, and this fact is now known, and I say that the president will be responsible for anything that happens to me."
"I'm a Ghanaian, and I don't fear anything. And, as I said, to die in the cause of fighting corruption is what I started with President Jerry Rawlings on the 31st of December 1982, and I'm not going to leave it because some people think that they can threaten me. "I'm not going to leave it because some people think that they can threaten me. I couldn't care less about that subject.
"...If they don't stop, I'll respond," he said, adding, "As to what I'll do, I reserve that for myself, but as I said, whatever happens to me, I lay my life for the republic of Ghana, and the president has a constitutional duty to protect me." He was referring to the fact that the president had a responsibility under the constitution to defend him. My home and I do not require any kind of surveillance or protection at this time. And whoever makes an effort, he will only have himself to blame for it.
Mr. Amidu also disclosed that his relatives were getting set to travel to the south to assist him in his defense.
"People have called and want to come in truckloads from Bawku, and I told them that what they are hearing is not true because, as a citizen of Ghana, I'm entitled to say my mind and defend the Constitution." "People have called and want to come in truckloads from Accra."
After the publication of the Agyapa study that he had commissioned, he was perplexed as to why so many people in government were so hostile towards him.
"Just because you are in the government doesn't mean that you go after the person or the fellow when you are dissatisfied about a report," he remarked, revealing: "The Minister of Finance has been my friend for years; why will I go for him?" When I was in the middle of drafting the report, did he come over to this house? When exactly did he not show up on October 21st? What exactly did I say to him? Why does he suddenly seem to be churning our information about me, targets, and everything else? Should I go out into the world? Let's put an end to this, and I say let's put an end to it before we air our dirty laundry in public.
