Liverpool and Newcastle United are both reportedly more interested in Federico Chiesa than previously, and the latter are preparing talks with Juventus.

Liverpool’s summer transfer window has already been action-packed. The Reds have sorted out some squad problems, mainly in the midfield, by signing Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Still linked with a host of star players, it looks like they’ll continue to improve.

One of the main names cropping up alongside Liverpool is Juventus Chiesa. While other sides have been linked, the Reds' interest seems most persistent.

That has intensified recently with the suggestion that they were meeting with Juventus directors to discuss a deal.

However, the Reds won't count their chickens yet. Indeed, a subsequent report suggested that Newcastle had leapfrogged them in the pursuit. While there was no reason given (though Italian Sandro Tonali's snare was cited), Italian outlet Calciomercato stated Eddie Howe’s side were the most likely to complete Chiesa's snare.

Now, it seems both sides are still in contention for the winger. Indeed, Corriere dello Sport reports both sides are very interested in signing him. In fact, the pair seem more interested in signing than they were previously. Why the sudden resurgence of interest comes from both sides is unclear, however, it’s the Magpies who are leading the chase at the moment.

The report states they are ‘incredibly ambitious’ and have scheduled ‘exploratory talks’ with Juventus. This is to see if there is a deal to be done. It’s unclear if Liverpool have yet met with Juventus and how that meeting turned out if they have. In any case, things will surely become clearer for both sides soon.

It would be a great one for them. If the Magpies were to pull off the Chiesa transfer, it would be great for them. Having secured Champions League football, they’ll want to continue their upward trajectory.

The signing of Tonali from AC Milan is a signal of their intent to do just that. Signing Chiesa would be more of the same. While hampered by injuries over the last couple of seasons, he’s clearly a very competent player; in the 2020–21 season for Juventus in Serie A, he scored eight goals and assisted on another eight.

In the Champions League that season, he scored four goals and provided an assist in eight games. Players who impact wins in Europe are what Newcastle want, hence their attempts to sign the winger.
