New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, Boakye Agyarko, has recounted a horrifying shooting incident which almost claimed his life in 1983.

After being taken captive by several soldiers in the midst of the chaos that ensued after an attempt at a coup, he claims that he was shot a total of six times, but that all of the bullets exited through his back.

According to him, the gunshot wound damage in his back left a deep wound, and as a result, he still has a scar from the occurrence.

The former Energy Minister discussed his political problems and experiences on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen in the days leading up to the NPP presidential primary. During the interview, the former minister spoke up about his terrifying experience.

"For the past 42 years, I have been a part of the NPP tradition. Because of politics and the NPP's tradition, I was shot, and I came very close to dying.

"Aside from being a coordinator of the National Students Union, I was deeply involved in politics, and I criticised the military rule, which made me a target," he added. "It was because of my criticism of the military rule that I became a target."

Mr. Agyarko stated that on that terrible day, he and 48 other people were shot, but he was the sole survivor who was even released after their remains were placed at the 37 Military Hospital. He attributes his survival to divine providence.

"The nurse who was working that shift and who introduced herself to me as Lily Tamakloe was the one who discovered that I was still alive. Therefore, she shared the news with the medical staff, and I was taken into surgery as soon as possible. "The doctor warned me that the anesthesia could have been fatal for me, so they did not give it to me," he recalled in his account of the event.

According to Mr. Agyarko, he remained in the hospital for close to three months and was eventually forced to leave the country on the recommendation of a high-ranking soldier surgeon named Dr. Akpaloo.

"I had to have some surgeries in the United States to ensure that I made a full recovery, and for two years, I was leaving but dead. As a result of those experiences, I just learned to keep silent about certain things," he noted. "I had to undergo some surgeries in the United States to ensure that I made

a full recovery."
