David de Gea has officially announced he will be leaving Manchester United at the end of his contract with former Reds defender Rio Ferdinand, who was successful at the club previously.

Rio Ferdinand has previously criticized Manchester United's 'unfair' treatment of David de Gea as his departure is now official.

The Spaniard's contract has expired but he is expected to accept a contract extension. The Red Devils reached an agreement with the longtime defender, withdrew the offer and returned to the negotiating table with a less valuable contract.

De Gea is set to end 12 years at Old Trafford after writing a farewell message to the club and their supporters. That leaves the Red Devils looking for a new number one stopper - Inter Milan star Andre Onana is set to move to Old Trafford. In the context that De Gea has officially left, the words of former Red Devils defender Ferdinand can reach the Old Trafford leadership. Even before the goalkeeper's contract officially ended, he denounced the club's treatment of De Gea.

Speaking on his Vibe with Five podcast, he said:

"It's a funny situation. Whether you think David de Gea is good enough for Manchester United is up for debate. "But he's a real serviceman for this football club. He's been there for 12 years and has been the Player of the Year many times. Overall, he's served the club very well, he He's a great professional player.

"There are a lot of people who have called him out and that's understandable and fair. I'm just a little annoyed with the way the club handled it. "It's about communication. I see more and more players leaving in bitterness and that's not good at all. I don't think that's fair to the players."

Then he added:

"David must be sitting there thinking, 'I never dreamed I would leave the club this way, this way'."

De Gea left Old Trafford after 545 appearances for United since joining from Spanish side Atletico Madrid. He kept 148 clean sheets in that span, including 17 in the Premier League last season when De Gea won his second Golden Glove of his career.

He has also won numerous trophies as the Red Devils, including a Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup and two League Cups. Now 32 years old, he will start looking for work before the 2023/24 campaign. It also prompted the Red Devils to look for a new goalkeeper. Academy graduate Dean Henderson is also set to follow De Gea out the door - Nottingham Forest have been involved in another attempt to sign him.

Last season's replacement goalkeeper Jack Butland has also left after securing a move to Scottish giants Rangers following his loan spell last season.
