Analysis: Why Real Madrid should be doing everything to hijack Barcelona’s move for Ivan Fresneda

The summer transfer window has been a busy period for Real Madrid, as they have already secured the signings of Fran Garcia, Brahim Diaz, Jude Bellingham, Joselu Mato, and Arda Guler. Real Madrid's ability to outmaneuver Barcelona in signing young talents has become a recurring trend, and it appears that trend may continue with their pursuit of Real Valladolid right-back Ivan Fresneda.

Fresneda had an impressive breakthrough season with Real Valladolid in the 2022-23 campaign, despite their relegation to the second tier of Spanish football. At just 18 years old, Fresneda has shown great potential and is available for a relatively low fee of €20 million. Barcelona held talks with Fresneda's agent earlier in the week, but they are unlikely to make an immediate move for the player, leaving Arsenal in the driving seat to secure his signature. However, Real Madrid is looking to enter negotiations with Fresneda's representatives in hopes of securing his services.

Right-back has been a problematic position for Real Madrid, with Dani Carvajal enduring a poor season in 2022-23. While the club intends to stick by Carvajal for the upcoming season, they recognize the need for backup options. Lucas Vazquez and Alvaro Odriozola have not proven to be consistent enough starters, making Fresneda an ideal candidate to push Carvajal for the starting spot and provide quality cover.

Under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti, Fresneda would have the opportunity to further develop his promising talents. Real Madrid's interest in Fresneda aligns with their long-term approach to signing young players who can contribute for the next decade or more. Adding Fresneda to their squad, alongside the likes of Bellingham, Guler, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Vinicius Junior, and Rodrygo, would establish a strong youth core within the first team. This prospect should be a cause for concern for teams across Europe, particularly in Spain.

While it remains to be seen if Real Madrid will push forward with their pursuit of Fresneda, their financial power and allure make them formidable competitors for his signature. Both Barcelona and Arsenal may fear losing out in the race to secure the highly-rated Spanish U19 international. Real Madrid's continued focus on securing top young talents demonstrates their commitment to building a formidable squad and maintaining their status as one of the leading clubs in Europe.
