Erik ten Hag was granted a transfer request after being accused of Man United selection bias.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag wants the club to act quickly on returning defender Eric Bailly, who will assist clear the club's pay bill when he returns from Marseille.

Manchester United are anxious for first-team sales in the coming months, and defender Eric Bailly is near the top of the list.

United sent Bailly away during the summer transfer window last year as part of a major exodus engineered by manager Erik ten Hag. However, the Ivorian's departure was only for a season-long loan to Marseille, with the French club declining their option to purchase him permanently.

Last year, the central defender accused the club of favoring English players. Bailly argued after his move to Marseille that Ten Hag's predecessors were hesitant to choose international players above their English compatriots.

The Red Devils manager responded to Bailly's latest charges, which were dubbed "absolute nonsense" by Liverpool veteran Jamie Carragher. "I can't say anything about it." "I wasn't in charge last season," Ten Hag said before being questioned if a player's nationality would ever enter his mind when deciding who to put on a team. "Not for me."

Bailly, 29, made 23 appearances for Marseille last season, but he is far down the pecking order at Old Trafford. Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, and Harry Maguire are all possible replacements for the former Villarreal defender.

Real Betis are interested in signing him and have identified him as a potential defensive recruit for the summer, according to Mundo Deportivo. If the deal goes through, Bailly would return to Spain after previously representing Espanyol and Villarreal.

However, it should be noted that Betis do not currently have funds to spend on recruitment; they have agreements in place to sign Marc Roca on loan from Leeds and free agent Hector Bellerin. They are likely to cash in on defender Luiz Felipe, who seems set to join West Ham for £17 million.

Bailly made 113 appearances for United in six injury-plagued seasons and was Jose Mourinho's first acquisition as manager. The Ivorian centre-back left Villarreal for almost £30 million.

After a successful debut season in which he helped Manchester United win the Community Shield, EFL Cup, and Europa League. Bailly's Old Trafford career was interrupted by injuries. The Ivory Coast international struggled to find consistent minutes and form due to a litany of ailments that began in late 2017, including a catastrophic ankle injury that kept him out for four months.
