Harry Maguire and Erik ten Hag are set to clash over Manchester United transfer valuation.
Harry Maguire appears to have no future at Manchester United in the near future, but leaving the club may be more difficult than previously anticipated.
Manchester United captain Harry Maguire could find himself in a bind with manager Erik ten Hag, with his future still up in the air.
Since his world-record move to Old Trafford in 2019, the former Leicester defender has experienced a stunning fall from glory. A string of high-profile gaffes has cost him his starting spot under Erik ten Hag.
Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have pushed him down the pecking order in recent seasons, while Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof have played ahead of him at center-back. Maguire was limited to just 16 starts in all competitions for the Red Devils last season, with only eight of those coming in the Premier League.
Because of the present circumstances at Old Trafford, he has been linked with a move away. As the defender returns to training later this week following his summer international obligations for England, his future looks increasingly questionable.
The Manchester Evening News reports that the Red Devils want 50 million if they sell Maguire this summer. That is a sum that none of his potential suitors are likely to match.
United are also apparently not aggressively pursuing a sale due to the necessity to sign a better successor if Maguire leaves, which might be costly. The Red Devils hope to sign a goalie and a striker before the transfer window closes, which may leave them with insufficient cash to find a successor.
Maguire could find himself in a difficult predicament as a result of this. The 30-year-old has already been advised that he must play consistently for his club if he wants to keep his position in Gareth Southgate's England squad.
"Harry's shown great resilience and his performance level with us throughout the season has been very, very good," he stated last month. It's been difficult for him because he's the captain of a massive, global football club and hasn't been able to play, which would have been difficult."
Maguire appears unlikely to get the first-team football he requires as long as he remains at Old Trafford. West Ham were linked with a bid for Maguire last season, but nothing came of it.
Tottenham are also interested in signing him, as the North London club looks to strengthen their defensive ranks. Last term, when asked about his captain's future, Ten Hag answered, "Let's just say I'm glad he's here, and when we needed him, he did his job." But it's also a choice he must make.
"No one would be happy in this situation, and he isn't either. He always trains at the highest levels, putting forth 100% effort. So he manages that scenario effectively, and he's vital for the squad because of his captaincy."
