Jose Mourinho renews his 'pursuit' of a Manchester United outcast following Erik ten Hag's transfer admission.
Jose Mourinho has already planned a raid on his previous club for midfielder Fred, and the Brazilian might be joined in Rome by one of his ex-teammates who is also wanted by Roma.
Jose Mourinho's proposal to bring former Manchester United player Marcel Sabitzer to Roma was rejected by Bayern Munich after he failed to secure a permanent move to Old Trafford.
The Austrian loanee joined the Red Devils in January to help Erik ten Hag boost his midfield options. He assisted United in ending their long trophy drought by lifting the Carabao Cup.
Ten Hag praised the midfielder's performances and integration with the team upon his arrival. "He's doing fantastic," the Dutchman said last term. He's settled in well at Manchester United and in the Premier League.
"He is a wonderful person who fits in well in the dressing room." He's a smart player, and we're pleased with his current role."
The 29-year-old made 18 appearances for his adopted parents in all competitions, scoring three goals. United had the chance to make the deal permanent, but declined, forcing Sabitzer to return to the Allianz Arena.
He may, however, be on the move again sooner rather than later. Mourinho's Roma are interested in bringing him to the Stadio Olimpico, according to La Repubblica.
According to reports, Roma has already made a bid for the midfielder's services to Bayern. They have offered to lease him to them for the upcoming season, with the option to purchase him permanently.
Bayern, on the other hand, has rejected that proposal, preferring to sell Sabitzer completely. He has two years left on his contract with the reigning German champions, having joined from Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig in 2021.
He has made 54 appearances for the club since then, scoring twice. Mourinho's effort to sign Sabitzer is not the first time he has expressed an interest.
Both midfielders have fallen from grace in recent years, with Sabitzer potentially available for significantly less this summer. Should Roma ever sign him, he might perhaps reunite with one of his former Manchester United teammates at the Stadio Olimpico.
The Italians are also said to be interested in Brazilian midfielder Fred. With only one year left on his contract, the former Shakhtar Donetsk player has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
If United agrees to sell Fred, Mourinho wants to create his midfield around him. After Chris Smalling and Nemanja Matic, he would be the third former Manchester United player to transfer to the Italian city in recent years.
