Reece James' father discusses Chelsea captain dreams amid Real Madrid transfer murmurs.

Reece James has been linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer, but his father Nigel claims he wants to stay at Chelsea and take over as captain after Cesar Azpilicueta leaves.

Despite interest from Real Madrid, Reece James wants to be Chelsea's new captain.

The England full-back's father, Nigel, has disclosed that his son wants to captain 'his club' under new manager Mauricio Pochettino. The Blues' morale is said to have improved dramatically when the former Tottenham Hotspur manager arrived.

Following his work to send a number of players out, Pochettino has had a tough first week of training with an emphasis on team building. Nigel, James' father, denied Madrid's interest while admitting his son would want to succeed Cesar Azpilicueta, who has departed for Atletico Madrid.

"Reece is a top player so I'm sure most clubs would want to sign him but right now I don't see anything changing," Nigel stated on The Beautiful Game podcast. He is a Chelsea player, and unless Chelsea wishes to move him, it is as if nothing happened.

"If a club no longer wants to work with you and, for whatever reason, wants to get rid of you, you go." If they are interested in you... He's been there since he was six years old, his aim is to wear the armband and captain the team, and the season we just had crushed his heart."

Last season, a dysfunctional Chelsea finished 12th, missing out on the top four and the European berths completely. "Coming off the pitch, losing games, it really hurt him," Nigel added.

"I'm sure it harmed many players." I can't speak for the other participants. All I can say is how agonising it was for my son to feel his club..."

Azpilicueta said an emotional farewell to Chelsea last week after 11 years at the club. "It's difficult to put into words how I feel." It's been fantastic, and I just want to thank everyone because it couldn't have happened without the help of so many people," he remarked.

"Wow, what a journey. Those memories I keep will last a lifetime. This is my home, and I hope to see everyone again someday. I'm quite pleased of the love they've shown me each and every time. Hopefully, we will be able to maintain this relationship indefinitely.

"After 11 years, I'm leaving Chelsea." I couldn't have imagined being here today, but thank you very much. I've been very happy to defend this badge both on and off the pitch. It's been my entire life here. So many incredible experiences here, not only on the pitch, but also off."
