Trent Alexander-Arnold discusses 'essential' Liverpool upgrades in order to compete with Manchester City.

Trent Alexander-Arnold believes that finishing higher than fifth in the Premier League this season is "necessary" for Liverpool.
Last season, the Reds underperformed in all major contests. They were eliminated from the Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup, and their fifth-place result in the Premier League means they will play in the Europa League in September.
Liverpool fans would love to see Jurgen Klopp's team win another trophy, but Alexander-Arnold has hinted that their Premier League form would take precedence. The right-back believes they must be "near perfect" to compete with Manchester City for the Premier League championship.
After winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup last season, Pep Guardiola's team is the dominant power in English and European football. They are only the second team in history to do it, following Manchester United 24 years ago.
During an interview with Sky Sports, Alexander-Arnold was asked about Liverpool's Premier League form. The first day of pre-season for the England international occurred on Tuesday, following an extended hiatus for representing his country in June.
"I think as a club it's necessary to be honest," Alexander-Arnold added. We respect every tournament we compete in, but if you asked us this time last year if we wanted to place fifth, we'd all say no, and we'd say the same again now.
"Do we want to finish fifth next year?" No. We want to be winning the league, competing for titles, and playing in the Champions League, so missing out on that next season is unfortunate.

Alexander-Arnold has challenged his Liverpool teammates to develop "consistency" after losing points against Leeds and Southampton last season. Klopp's team was also outstanding at times, such as when they thrashed Manchester United 7-0.
Alexander-Arnold struggled in the first half of the 2022/23 season but found his form once Klopp changed his role. When Liverpool has the ball, he shifts into central midfield and back into defense when they lose it.
