Six years after Steven Gerrard trained him, a Liverpool transfer target could make a comeback.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is looking to strengthen his defense this summer, and it appears that one of his top transfer targets may be interested in moving to Merseyside.
Jurgen Klopp's transfer request for Torino star Perr Schuurs may be met, with the Dutchman preferring to move to Liverpool.
The Reds have long been linked with a move for the former Ajax star, and they appear to have a long-standing interest in him. They were considering a trade for him in 2017, when he was only 17 years old.
Schuurs was a Fortuna Sittard player at the time, and he was even invited to train with the club's under-18 side, which was then coached by Steven Gerrard. He finally settled in Ajax. Liverpool allegedly had an interest in Schuurs during his tenure with the Dutch giants.
The Reds were apparently impressed with him in his two appearances against Ajax in the 2020/21 Champions League group stages. "Interest from Liverpool in me?" he asked at the time. I'm not preoccupied about that. "First and foremost, I want to win trophies with Ajax and stay here for a few seasons."
They were out once more as the defender explored a move to Torino in Italy. He has continued his impressive progress with the Serie A team, and Liverpool have kept tabs on him. The player's agent, George Gardu, confirmed that the Reds, along with a slew of other European clubs, had tried to sign him.
"Clubs of the calibre of Tottenham, Liverpool, and PSG moved to take the player," Gardi stated."In addition to Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Paris Saint-Germain, three Italian clubs were interested in Schuurs."
According to recent rumours, Klopp has gone one step further to secure a deal by making a personal plea to his Anfield employers.
A transfer might cost up to £35 million, with Schuurs having three years left on his Torino contract after joining from Ajax last summer.
During his first season in Turin, the three-time Eredivisie champion made 33 appearances. Several other clubs have taken notice of his performances.
Leicester were previously linked, but considering their relegation to the Championship last season, they are unlikely to make a move today. Crystal Palace is also said to be a fan.
If the Reds complete the transfer, Schuurs will become the club's third signing of the summer, after the additions of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai from Brighton and RB Leipzig, respectively.
