Christian Pulisic of Chelsea has been informed he made the wrong decision as he nears a deal with AC Milan.
The forward is about to leave West London after four years and join Serie A, but a former MLS star believes the American should have been returned to his birthplace.
An ex-MLS player claims that his previous club made a mistake by not signing Christian Pulisic from Chelsea this summer.
The USMNT talisman is poised to leave Stamford Bridge soon, with Italian heavyweights AC Milan leading the hunt for his signing after the winger turned down offers from French club Lyon. Last season, the 24-year-old had a forgettable season for the Blues, appearing in just 811 minutes as they ended 13th in the Premier League.
Pulisic's time in West London appears to be coming to an end following a rough couple of years in which he has slipped behind a slew of stars in the pecking order, including Mykhailo Mudryk and new recruit Christopher Nkunku. The man Chelsea fans once christened "Captain America" has one year left on his contract and the Blues are ready to cash in.
According to Sky Italia, the Rossoneri have agreed on a fee with his current employers, and he will come to Italy this week for a medical. If the move is completed, he will be the second Blues player to join AC Milan this season, following Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Landon Donovan, a compatriot and former MLS regular, has not endorsed Pulisic's upcoming departure. The former LA Galaxy striker, widely regarded as the best player in the country's history, believes the Pennsylvanian ace should have been returned to his nation instead.
The ex-Everton loanee believes that a move to MLS would have been more appropriate, especially with the World Cup coming to the country in three years. In 2026, hosting duties will be split by Canada and Mexico, and Donovan believes that the LA Galaxy should have sought for an American household name ahead of this historic event.
He addressed Fox Sports about the potential influence of Lionel Messi's planned arrival at Inter Miami on the popularity of the sport in the United States: "I'm sure he's making plenty of money, but the ability to come to MLS is kind of like [Lionel] Messi's."
