Jose Mourinho's "respect" statement triggered a melee, with Mikel Arteta being attacked with a bottle.
A LOOK BACK: In late 2017, Manchester United and Manchester City engaged in a particularly fierce rivalry, which resulted in some rather unpleasant post-match scenes.
Manchester City and Manchester United have had a number of heated confrontations over the years, and there is no love lost between the two clubs.
One of the more heated exchanges occurred in 2017, when Pep Guardiola's team traveled to Old Trafford to expand their advantage at the top of the Premier League at the expense of their most ferocious opponents. While the football was entertaining, much of the post-game discussion focused on off-the-field brawls between the two rivals.
Mirror Football has chosen to recall the tense evening in which then-Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was pelted with milk and then-City assistant and now Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was hit on the head with a bottle.
The game
Both teams understood going into the game that the outcome would have a significant impact on the title chase for the balance of the 2017/18 season. The visitors struck first, with mercurial midfielder David Silva putting City ahead two minutes before the break.
However, they failed to see the half-time siren without conceding, as United reacted almost immediately with a Marcus Rashford strike, and the scores remained level at the break.
However, whatever Guardiola told his players before the interval certainly worked, as Nicolas Otamendi put City back in front nine minutes later. United pushed for a second equalizer but came up short, allowing City to increase their advantage at the top to 11 points and effectively finish the title fight.
It was a night to remember, as City ended United's incredible 40-match undefeated run at home, while also assuring Guardiola's men became the first team in English top-flight history to win 14 consecutive games.
At full-time, the two managers shook hands but went in opposite directions, with Mourinho heading down the tunnel and Guardiola celebrating with his players on the field.
The players from Manchester United had long been in their own dressing room by the time the City squad returned, but the visitors made sure to gloat suitably. Ederson shared a photo of himself smiling next to the Red Devils crest.
While Kyle Walker was making the '2-1' motion, music was blasting from the away dressing room, and one City supporter even tossed out ticker tape as the players posed for photos.
This irritated Mourinho, who chose to postpone his own post-match media responsibilities in order to protest to City about the noise they were making. He did it in typical Mourinho fashion, marching towards the open door leading to the visitors' locker room and opening it.The consequences
Mourinho's rant enraged the City team, and the'special one' was drenched with water and assaulted with a plastic bottle. It is well known that a carton of milk was also fired in his direction, but it missed the United leader and instead coated one of his employees.
Not one to back down from a fight, Ederson was quick to defend his squad, grabbing Mourinho by the arm and yelling, "You f****** show respect." A scuffle is reported to have occurred as other United players joined in to defend their manager.
