Alexis MacAllister gets a new Liverpool nickname thanks to Jurgen Klopp's presentation of the Reds

Following his move to the Reds, the Argentina World Cup winner made an immediate impression on his new manager, who has given him a suitable new nickname.

Jurgen Klopp dug deep into Liverpool's history to discover a nickname for new signing Alexis MacAllister, and he's hoping it's a good omen.

Argentina World Cup winner Mac Allister has joined the Reds from Brighton for a low initial fee of £35 million, and Klopp has christened him 'Gary' in a tribute to the Reds' former midfielder.

Gary McAllister, a 35-year-old Scot, raised eyebrows when he signed at Liverpool on a free transfer in 2000, but his ability and experience helped Liverpool win the FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Cup in his first full season. Despite his brief tenure at the club, he left as a Reds legend in 2002.

Mac Allister joins a Liverpool team that has been relegated to Europe's second tier tournament for the first time since 2016, with the upcoming season marking the club's first start in the Europa League under the German management.

Klopp is optimistic that Mac Allister and fellow newcomer Dominik Szoboszlai can hit the ground running, and he is delighted with their influence thus far.

When asked how he felt about the pair by the Reds' website, he said, "Very happy!" "Two excellent players."

"I was thinking about nicknames right away, and I thought it would be a great nickname for Alexis... Gary!" He certainly plays good football, just like Dom.

"I was pretty clear from the moment we signed them, the public reaction was pretty good, the internal reaction was outstanding, the boys know about football, so they were immediately like, 'Oh my God...' so that's really good."

"They're here now, and it didn't take long for them to impress on the pitch, so that's good." Trent trimmed his hair - [back to] the most successful haircut in his career, so he sacrificed the cool look for success, which I admire!"
