Leaked tapes require a policy review - a security researcher

Dr.
Kwesi Biney who is a security inspector has called for an investigation into the tapes released alleging the removal ofthe Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare from office.

This,
he said, will help establish the truth or otherwise of whatthe tape said and ensure thatthe necessary decisions were made against the people or those who were convicted. The video which was released on Tuesday July 11, said it was the High Commissioner of Policeand some leaders of the rulingNew Patriotic Party who were plotting to sack the IGP.

According to the tape, the conspirators believed that Dr Dampare could be a "stumbling block" for the party's cause for victory in the 2024 elections. The Government, through Home Secretary Mr Ambrose Derry, denied the allegations, calling the released tapes "absurd".

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), in Accra on Wednesday, Dr Biney said that such allegations should not be taken lightly because they could have obstacles to national security. "The police are in charge of domestic security, so if the people who are supposed to ensure peace and order are going that way, I am afraid... even if the minister ( of the municipality) means that this is not true, also the investigation will continue," he said.

He added that the voices and names mentioned must bethoroughly investigated to determine whether they are true or not. "We will do justiceto the people of Ghana, but we do not see it as small as it is. It is a threat to national security," he said. Dr Biney, who is also the Chairman of the Executive Council of the International Commission on Human Rights -Switzerland (Ghana Chapter), called for the amendment of the section of the Constitution, which allows the president to appoint executive officers for different security agencies. separate.

Dr Biney said that this willreduce political interference and ensure that the objectives work. He also expressed concern about Ghana's political system, describing it as "party rule" rather than democracy.

According to him, such a system has not done well for the security of Ghana's peace and the achievement of its development goals. He therefore warned politicians to be careful in their relationshipwith their voters who are seeking power, and to avoid producing fake news to gainpower.
