Rising inflation must worry thegovernment - The Economist

An economist and assistant professor of investment and economics at the University of Ghana business school,Professor Lord Mensah says the recent rise in prices is a cause for concern.

The Ghana Statistical Service estimates inflation for June 2023 at 42.5%, an increase from 42.2% recorded in May this year. This will be the secondmonth in a row where inflation will increase after four consecutive months of declineat the beginning of the year. However, month-on-month growth fell from 4.8% in May to 3.2% in June. Speaking on Starr Today, Joshua Kodjo Mensah, aneconomist said the recent changes are worrying.

"In
the past few months, we have had a higher increase in Treasuries and as an investor or a potential investor the hope isthat the depression andinflation will continue continuesand so if it does not go down, that is a cause for concern," said. Professor Lord Mensah also added that efforts to fightinflation are futile. "It is a cause for concern because if you look at the IMF program, it seems that we have neutral forces that are supposed to cause inflation. income and savings, as we say,is done by taxes. And once you pay more tax, businesses pass it on to consumers by raisingprices.

"On
the other hand, the IMF program is also considering supporting monetary policy to fight inflation. So, one arm is trying to lower the fight against inflation, the other is making the rate higher.

 "S
o, you wonder how we'regoing to bring inflation down? We cannot maintain a higher price than Treasuries, it is not sustainable because the real value of any money you make is not good. We must bring inflation," he repeated.
