Jurrien Timber's first statements as an Arsenal player explain why he will never join Manchester United
Jurrien Timber became Arsenal's second summer acquisition after his £38.5 million move from Ajax was completed - and the 22-year-old only had eyes for the Gunners.
Jurrien Timber has revealed why he left Ajax to join Mikel Arteta's Arsenal project this summer.
Timber has agreed to a five-year contract with Arsenal after the Gunners agreed to pay Ajax £38.5 million for his signing. On Friday afternoon, he was confirmed as the club's second signing of the transfer window, following Kai Havertz and before Declan Rice.
Arteta has given the 22-year-old the No. 12 shirt at his new club and will utilize him in center defense and at right-back. Timber had previously been connected with Manchester United because to the presence of Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, but he has now relocated to north London.
"I've always been a fan of Arsenal," he said on the club's official website. "It was due to my brothers." They were always Arsenal fans, and I liked watching them play. They had huge players, and they played in a certain style. I adore the club.
"I had this from a young age, but it was instilled in me by my brothers." Of course, I enjoyed watching Robin van Persie and Thierry Henry. They were some of my favorite players."
"I just like the way Arsenal plays, it's a bit like Ajax's style, and I like to play from the back," he continued. There are many similarities, particularly in the way Arsenal and Ajax like to play."
Despite his youth, Timber is already a well-known club and international player. He appeared in 34 Eredivisie games for Ajax last season and has 15 caps for the Netherlands.
He is technically sound and particularly good on the ball, having graduated from the Ajax academy. He completed 2,501 passes in the Eredivisie last season, 902 of which were forward, putting him first in the competition.
He's never hidden his desire to leave his own country and become a better athlete. "A transfer is getting closer and closer, so to speak," he said in April to De Telegraaf. "There's a lot of concrete interest, and I've reached agreements with Ajax."
"Ajax asked me to stay for at least one more season and to extend my contract last year." As a club boy, I did it with passion, and we will revisit the subject after the season. I frequently speak with lads who play football abroad at the Dutch national team. Someday, I'd like to take that step."
That day has here, and he will travel to the United States with the Gunners on their pre-season tour. Arteta's team will face MLS All Stars at Audi Field in Washington DC on July 20, Manchester United at MetLife Stadium in New York on July 22, and Barcelona at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on July 26.
