Jurgen Klopp's "real talent" was revealed. Liverpool's starting quarterback sustains a catastrophic injury.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been planning to loan away some of his young players, but one player backed by the German manager is now on the sidelines.
Harvey Blair, a teenage Liverpool sensation, was on the verge of a much-needed loan move when he got injured.
Blair, 19, was given a surprise start by Reds manager Jurgen Klopp in 2021. He was picked to the starting lineup for a Carabao Cup match against Preston, and he played 55 minutes as Klopp's side extended their run that would culminate with them capturing the trophy in February 2022.
Several clubs have shown interest in the forward this summer, with the Reds planning to loan him out for regular first-team action. However, a torn meniscus has derailed his ambitions, forcing him to sit out for an extended period of time.
"After a promising start to the new season, I am deeply disappointed to report that I suffered a meniscus tear during training earlier this week," the 19-year-old posted on Instagram. "It is undeniably a difficult setback, but I am confident that with the right mindset and the help of God, I will overcome this difficult phase."
A number of other academy stars, including recent injury casualty Stefan Bajcetic, expressed their best wishes. "You'll be back stronger brother," added Bajcetic, who is nearing full fitness after scoring his first goal for Liverpool last season.
Prior to his injury, clubs in England and Scotland were said to be interested in signing Blair. Aberdeen was one among the interested parties, having previously signed Leighton Clarkson from Liverpool this summer, with Portsmouth and Reading also interested.
Blair appeared on the right or left flank 16 times in Premier League 2 last season. He scored five goals, including two against Fulham, and a loan seemed like the logical next step for someone who pleased Klopp on his debut.
He was one of several young players who started, including Tyler Morton and Neco Williams, as well as Elijah Dixon-Bonner, Conor Bradley, and Owen Beck. Not all of those players are still at Anfield, but they all impressed Klopp, who specifically mentioned Blair following the 2-0 win.
