Unnecessary stress in the House of Parliament
The legislative branch of government is a significant component of the overall government, and its primary objective is to contribute significantly to the socioeconomic advancement of a nation. It is the responsibility of those who fill this function to make certain that matters pertaining to law and order are addressed in a manner that strives to establish tranquility and order in every region of the nation.
The legislative branch of the government is responsible for one of the most important functions of the government, which is to deliberate on issues that are of public interest for the benefit of the country. Because of this function, members of parliament are able to freely address concerns that have arisen in any region of the state in an effort to maintain orderliness for the benefit of the populace as a whole.
Making laws is also an important part of government. Without the necessary regulations, no activity can be properly governed for the goal of ensuring decency and the accomplishment of excellent results, and this is because there is no way to regulate activities in an appropriate manner. Because of this, every proposed law in the state goes through extensive debate before it is enacted. This is done to guarantee that only laws that are beneficial to the nation as a whole are signed into law.
When specific topics are brought up for debate in Parliament, every member of Parliament has been granted the authority to openly express their opinions on certain topics. The Members of Parliament are encouraged to discuss all of the important issues by being given the opportunity to freely air their opinions. This helps to explain why every member of parliament possesses legislative immunity.
The immunity is intended to shield them from attacks brought by members of the general public. Given the significance of this protection, it should come as no surprise that anything stated on the floor of Parliament cannot be used as evidence against any of the Members of Parliament. On the other hand, any negative comments should be voiced inside the House of Parliament rather than anywhere else.
This means that if an MP makes negative remarks about someone at the Accra Sports Stadium or the Babayara Sports Stadium in a manner that is unfair to anybody, the person about whom the MP made the unfair remark can be sued by the person about whom the MP made the unfair remark. The Members of Parliament are well aware of this fact, which is why they exercise extreme restraint in the comments that they make outside of Parliament.
A short while ago, the Speaker of Parliament, the Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, had reason to caution all members of Parliament to exercise caution with regard to comments they make outside of the chamber. Referring to the matter of parliamentary immunity, the Speaker of the House provided an explanation, and he did the right thing in doing so. It is hoped that our representatives will heed this counsel and desist from engaging in acts of character assassination or slander outside of the chambers of Parliament. We are grateful to the Speaker for providing us with such sound guidance.

It is clear that Members of Parliament are contributing significantly to the growth of the nation when considered in light of the function of Parliament. In point of fact, without their participation, nothing can function normally.
However, one issue that frequently characterizes the deliberations in Parliament and that is of considerable concern to the general public is the unnecessary tension that often arises as a result of these discussions. The members of parliament are having contentious discussions with one another in a manner that gives the impression that the end of the world is about to take place in the next five minutes. Attacks on one other may be argued to be part of their parliamentary style, but this is still inacceptable, seeing as how a respectable institution like Parliament acts as an excellent training ground for morals for spectators and listeners of parliamentary procedings.
One set of people may desire to score political points over members of the opposing side, and this can sometimes be perceived as the true motivation for what is going on here. These kinds of moves are not beneficial and should be avoided at all costs.
Members of Parliament hailing from every region of the country share a common bond: they are all brothers and sisters who are obligated to recognize and respect one another as children of God. Disagreements are inevitable if all of the Members of Parliament adhere to this idea; nevertheless, those disagreements won't be marked by the kind of pointless tension that is harmful to the progression of society and politics.
Not very long ago, for instance, the Minority in Parliament received instructions from the leadership of their party to disapprove any nominations of ministers that were submitted to them by the President of the Republic. It was stated that the bloated size of the government was the motivation behind both this action and the instruction that was issued.
Because the number of Ministers in the current administration is fewer than it was in the previous government before President Akufo-Addo came to power, this argument cannot be correct. The previous government was in power before President Akufo-Addo took office.
The discussion in parliament was held up, and it continued late into the night on March 24, 2023. For some of us, this could have been prevented, which would have kept the atmosphere in the Parliament from becoming tense.
At the end of it all, following a frantic session, the Justices of the Supreme Court and the Ministers were given the green light to take their positions.
It was made very evident that some members of the NDC Parliamentary Caucus voted in favor of approving the Ministers whose names were presented to the House. There were anywhere from 21 to 31 Members of Parliament on the Minority side who cast their vote in favor of approving the Ministers.
Because of this, tensions have been running high inside the NDC, and some of its members have even referred to those MPs as traitors. There is a young guy who is interested in running for the position of Member of Parliament in the Bibiani-Ahwiaso-Bekwai Constituency in the Western North Region. This young man has publicly insulted his own Members of Parliament, stating that they would "fish them out and sack them from the party." If this is what this potential member of parliament has in mind, then he need to be aware that he has no chance of being successful inside his own party. Even if they belong to political parties that want their members to behave in a certain way, individuals still have the ability to make the decisions that are best for them. On the other hand, criticizing and insulting members of parliament as if they lacked the capacity to think for themselves is not productive and should not be tolerated.
On March 24, 2023, the situation for the Speaker of Parliament became difficult. He made an effort to be fair to both the Majority and the Minority in the conversation. At that time, it became abundantly evident that the task of the Speaker is not a simple endeavor to accomplish; hence, there is a constant need for us to pray for him as he performs his duties. While praying for him, all of the members of Parliament and the officials of their respective parties should also take steps to promote unity, peace, and tolerance, as well as peaceful co-existence with all political factions in Parliament, in order to ensure that peace will prevail in Ghana. This should be done in addition to praying for the president.
It is recommended that the allegation of bribery against members of the NDC's own parliamentary delegation that has been brought up by some NDC members be withdrawn because it will only serve to increase tensions within the party. The National Democratic Coalition will be more at peace as a result, provided that this advise is taken into consideration in a calm and constructive manner.
Disagreements in legislative discussions are never frowned upon, but they must be conducted within an atmosphere of mutual respect and tolerance for one another.
