Former Okaikwei North Member of Parliament, Fuseini Issah, has rejected the notion that an Inspector General of Police (IGP) can aid the ruling government in rigging a general election. Speaking on the Big Issue program, Issah emphasized Ghana's transparent and robust electoral system, which makes the idea of election manipulation in favor of the incumbent party impossible.
Issah stressed that the ultimate determinant of election outcomes lies solely within the polling stations. His remarks were prompted by the release of an audio recording in which a Police Commissioner, in conversation with a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), suggests the removal of IGP George Akuffo Dampare ahead of the 2024 elections. The Police Commissioner alleges that the IGP would prevent the NPP from manipulating the upcoming polls, thereby urging the President to dismiss him.
Nevertheless, Issah urged caution and disregarding the leaked audio, as the claims made within it remain unsubstantiated. He called upon the public to avoid drawing premature conclusions based on unverified information.
In response to the leaked tape, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has directed the formation of a seven-member special committee to investigate its contents. The tape allegedly contains discussions about the government's intention to oust Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare in an effort to manipulate the forthcoming 2024 General Elections.
The decision to form the committee follows a demand from the minority caucus of Parliament, requesting a thorough investigation to establish the authenticity and credibility of the leaked recording. The committee will consist of three Members of Parliament from each side of the house, with the assistance of a technical expert.
The Speaker has mandated that the names of the three members from both the Majority and Minority caucuses be disclosed within one week to initiate the committee's proceedings. These steps aim to address concerns raised and ensure transparency throughout the investigation process.
