Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, the presiding archbishop and general overseer of the Action Chapel International ministry, has expressed his support for the death penalty's abolition.

In an explanation, Diocese supervisor Duncan-Williams recognized the contentions introduced both for and against the cancelation of capital punishment in Ghana.

He emphasized that abolishing the death penalty is in line with the teachings of the Bible, pointing out that God created life and is the only one who can take it away. As a result, he wholeheartedly supports the bill's goal of ending the death penalty.

Individuals from Parliament (MPs) are presently partitioned over the report of the Established, Legitimate, and Parliamentary Undertakings Council on the Criminal Offenses Alteration Act, which means to supplant capital punishment with life detainment.

While capital punishment was acquired from the frontier organization and has generally been a discipline for offenses like homicide, endeavored murder, decimation, robbery, and pirating of gold or jewels, Ghana has not executed any guilty parties beginning around 1993.

During the debate in parliament over the amendment bill, lawmakers had opposing viewpoints regarding the death penalty.

Cletus Avoka, the Zebilla Constituency MP, stated, "I first submit that the arguments they have advanced in terms of the motion are very scary and have no measures at all." He expressed his disagreement. Contentions for the movement are unmeritorious."

In his statement, Archbishop Duncan-Williams emphasized that it is contradictory for society to condemn killing while also using killing as a form of punishment.

"As a general public, we can't censure killing but utilize killing as a type of discipline.

“As God's children, we are commanded to live harmoniously, to love one another as ourselves, and to show mercy to the oppressed and afflicted. The Sacred texts give us direction: The Bible says in Romans 12:19-21, "Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, Vengeance is mine, I will repay," that you should "leave room for the wrath of God." Be that as it may, in the event that your foe is ravenous, feed him, and assuming he is parched, give him a beverage; for in this manner you will stack consuming coals on his head. Do not succumb to evil; rather, overcome it with goodness.

Full statement by Archbishop Duncan-Williams

I have been cautiously following the continuous discussion right now before Parliament following a movement moved by Hon. Francis-Xavier Sosu for the alteration of the Lawbreaker and Different Offenses Act, 1960 (Act 29) and Military Demonstration, 1962 (Act 105) to supplant capital punishment with life detainment.

I would like to commend the Rt. Hon. Speaker and Individuals from Parliament for your work up to this point and accept that the discussion will prompt a fruitful result with Individuals casting a ballot for the bills.

I have listened to arguments for and against the death penalty in Ghana over the years. The Bible is in favor of abolishing the death penalty. God made life and God is the one in particular who can take life. To this end I'm in full help of the Bills' level headed to nullify capital punishment.

We cannot, as a society, condemn killing while also using it as a form of punishment.

We are to live in harmony as God's children, to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to show mercy to the oppressed and the afflicted.

The Good book likewise says in 2 Peter 3:9 "He shows restraint toward you, not maintaining that anybody should die, but rather everybody to come to contrition." In Ezekiel 33:11, it is stated "God doesn't want the demise of anybody, not even the underhanded." Lastly, in Matthew 5:7 the Book of scriptures says "Favored are the forgiving; for they will get leniency."

Therefore, I appeal to H.E. the President of the Republic of Ghana, Vice President, Speaker of Parliament, Chief Justice of the Republic, Military High Command, Police High Command, Prisons Service Board, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Religious Leaders, Traditional Rulers, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Media, and all relevant Stakeholders to support calls for the death penalty to be abolished in Ghana.

I particularly appeal to Members of Parliament to exhibit courage and lead the way in securing the passage of Bills to replace the death penalty with life in prison. According to my understanding, Ghana would become the 29th nation in Africa to abolish the mandatory death penalty. To be sure, now is the ideal opportunity.

My prayers and support are with you.

Archbishop N. Duncan-Williams has signed it.
