AND STAGES OF LEARNING IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

Aspirancy: This initial stage involves a period of discernment
and formation, where individuals explore their vocation to the priesthood. It

Pre-Seminary: Candidates who feel called to the priesthood
often enter a pre-seminary program or college seminary. This stage provides a
foundation in philosophy and human formation and generally lasts for two to
four years.
Seminary: After completing the pre-seminary stage,
candidates enter the major seminary, also known as theology or divinity school.
The seminary education is divided into two parts:
a. Philosophy Studies: Seminarians undertake a comprehensive
study of philosophy, which forms the basis for theological inquiry. This stage
usually lasts for two to four years, depending on the seminary and the
candidate's academic background.
b. Theology Studies: Following the philosophy studies,
seminarians progress to theological studies, where they delve deeper into
Catholic doctrine, scripture, sacraments, moral theology, and pastoral
ministry. Theology studies typically last for four years.
Pastoral Formation: Alongside their academic studies, future
priests engage in pastoral formation to gain practical experience and develop
their pastoral skills. This includes internships, parish assignments, and
supervised ministry. Pastoral formation is often integrated into the seminary
curriculum throughout the years of formation.
Transitional Diaconate: Before ordination to the priesthood,
candidates are usually ordained as transitional deacons. This ordination
typically occurs in the final year of seminary studies and allows candidates to
serve in certain liturgical and pastoral roles within the Church.
Ordination: Upon successful completion of the seminary
program and fulfillment of other requirements, candidates are ordained as
priests. The ordination ceremony confers the sacrament of Holy Orders, enabling
priests to administer the sacraments and serve the faithful.

vary depending on the seminary program, academic progress, and the specific
