Six boys aged between 16 and 27 have been arrested for gang-raping a 19-year-old girl in the Anam community of the Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The boys took turns with the girl and recorded the act, which circulated on social media.
The girl who spoke to the Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo, said she was returning from her maternal uncle’s house when the boys attacked her.
She was, however, rescued by passers-by, who heard her cry. Before she got home, another set of boys accosted her and forced her to surrender her underwear to them.
Commissioner, Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, said, “Following the viral video on the internet of the 19-year-old girl who was gang raped by six boys in Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area of the state, the Commissioner intervened by arresting the boys and rescuing the victim.
“The suspects have been handed over to the police, and the case transferred to the state criminal investigation department of police in Awka, from where they would be charged to court.”
The suspects’ names were Afam Ezenwa, Chijioke Ifeanyi, Collins Obadom, Abuchi Okechukwu, Chima Obiekezie and Sunday Okafor.
Parents of the victim said their daughter was the third victim of the rape suspects. They said they were known for raping girls and collecting their pants which usually resulted in death.
They urged the government not to take the case lightly as their daughter’s life was at risk. This is especially true now that they haven't yet to retrieve her underwear.
Gangrapping has been going on recently among teenage boys because of highly exposure to pornography sites and contents.
It's about the time we make sure to censor what the teenagers watch online. Easy access to websites and social media is the main cause of such immoral behaviors among the youth and teenagers nowadays.
