Onana has already agree personal terms on a five-year deal.
And after weeks of negotiations the two clubs have settled on an initial fee of £43million for the Cameroon international, report the Daily Mail.
The deal will also include add-ons which could take the final total to around £47m.
United could announce the deal imminently and hope to process Onana's visa so he can join the club's pre-season tour of the US.
He could even play a part in Saturday's friendly against Arsenal
If not, Onana could instead make his first United appearance against Borussia Dortmund or Real Madrid before the end of the month.
Onana's arrival could signal a transfer exit for Dean Henderson, who is wanted by Nottingham Forest.
The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at Forest after a fall-out with the Red Devils.
Now he is being heavily linked with a permanent move to the City Ground after recovering from the thigh surgery that ruled him out for the last few months of the campaign.
Henderson recently claimed that he "punched off the manager and believes “he is not in line for a comeback” as he revealed he did not want Ten Hag to see him training as he believed the boss would want to keep him.
The deal will also include add-ons which could take the final total to around £47m.
