Nathan Kofi Boakye, who served as Commissioner of Police (COP) before retiring, is gaining traction as a potential candidate for the vice presidential slot of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Stakeholders and advisors to the previous President are rumoured to have given serious thought to the possibility of using the name of a retired top police chief in their deliberations.
Kofi Boakye is a native of the Ashanti Region, which is where the NDC is rumoured to be looking for a running mate in the event that John Mahama decides to replace Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang. Kofi Boakye is a trained lawyer and is from the Ashanti Region.
There has been a lot of talk within the party about how retired police officers would be able to better meet the requirements that Mahama has than the previous vice chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.
Many people had known for many years about Nathan Kofi Boakye's supposed "silent affiliation" to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Reports suggested that Mahama could have chosen him Inspector General of Police if the NDC was in power when Mahama retired.
At the time, COP Retired Kofi Boakye was serving as the Director of Legal and Prosecution for the Ghana Police Service. He was observed attending the wedding of Sammy Gyamfi, who was serving as the National Communications Officer for the opposition NDC, in the presence of John Mahama and other NDC gurus.
In spite of this, the retired COP went out on a high note, leaving the military with a solid credibility for professionalism and bravery. In recognition of his many years of service to the Ghana Police Service and to Ghana, he was the recipient of a number of honours.
Many people believe that electing Nathan Kofi Boakye as vice president could provide Mahama with the necessary boost to win the presidency.
Others have the opinion that if "one of their own" is on the ticket for Vice President in 2024, the police will be more professional and uncompromising in their opposition to the alleged rigging plot that the NPP has for the election.
The idea that Kofi Boakye is "eminently qualified" for the position is supported by the fact that, in his current role as Vice President, Kofi Boakye is in command of the Republic's police force as well as the other security councils; as a result, Kofi Boakye has been called "eminently qualified."
Nathan Kofi Boakye is the latest probable running mate for John Mahama in 2024, joining the ranks of candidates such as Alex Kofi Mensah Mould, Kwame Awuah Darko, Julius Debrah, Sylvester Mensah, and Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, amongst others.
