Manchester United are showing keen interest in securing the services of an expensive midfielder who is also wanted by Liverpool. A reliable source within the club has disclosed that the deal's progress hinges on the departure of a particular player.
The Red Devils are on the verge of finalizing a contract with Inter Milan's goalkeeper, Andre Onana. Personal terms have been agreed upon, and the 27-year-old is set to sign a five-year deal with an option for an additional 12 months.
In addition to Onana's arrival, the club is also eyeing 20-year-old Zion Suzuki from Urawa Red Diamonds as a backup goalkeeper. The completion of Onana's transfer will likely accelerate Dean Henderson's permanent move to Nottingham Forest.
Furthermore, Manchester United has bolstered their midfield by adding Mason Mount's creativity to their ranks. While the primary focus is on securing a new starting striker, reliable sources, such as Fabrizio Romano, have revealed that the club is also considering another midfielder.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed that United is interested in Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat. The 26-year-old Moroccan, who predominantly plays as a holding midfielder, gained attention with his impressive performances at the World Cup.
It's worth noting that Liverpool is also in the running for Amrabat, and they are in need of at least one, possibly two, more midfielders with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson likely to leave for Saudi Arabia during the summer transfer window.
Gazzetta dello Sport recently estimated Amrabat's market value at around €30m (£25.6m) if he moves this summer. Besides Liverpool, there are admirers of his talent in LaLiga as well.
However, Romano suggests that Manchester United could pose a threat to Liverpool's pursuit of Amrabat. To do so, the club must first complete the signings of Onana and a new striker while also offloading Fred and Donny van de Beek.
According to Romano, "It’s true that Sofyan Amrabat is one of the players being considered by Manchester United. Ten Hag knows that Amrabat is on the market. He’s an expensive midfielder because Fiorentina are always tough negotiators. But at the moment, the understanding is that Manchester United is considering Amrabat as one of the options for the midfield, but it’s not a priority."
Romano emphasizes that the main priority is to secure the deal for Inter's goalkeeper, Andre Onana. Once this is accomplished, the focus will shift to acquiring a new striker, with Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund emerging as the top contender at present.
After these initial moves, Manchester United will proceed with the second midfield deal. "Then they will decide on a second midfielder," continued Romano. "A defensive midfielder [to follow] Mason Mount. Amrabat is one of the names – not the only one – they’re considering. But it will depend also on the outgoings because Fred has to leave; there are clubs like Galatasaray, Saudi clubs, as well as Fulham and other Premier League clubs that are interested in him. Also, Donny van de Beek has good chances to leave the club this summer. So they’re waiting for outgoings, and then it’ll be time to decide on the new midfielder."
It's worth mentioning that, apart from Fred and Van de Beek, Scott McTominay could also be on his way out during this transfer window.
