President Akufo-Addo

It is not fair, according to Ghana's President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to cast all of the responsibility for corruption on politicians alone; rather, the rot can be found in every sector of society. According to him, the form of corruption that makes headlines, the kind that includes politicians and high-profile figures, is not the only type of corruption that slows down progress and hinders growth; there are other types as well.

This was stated by the President of the United States of America on the opening day of the 2023 World Convention of the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship International, which was held in Accra on July 13, 2023.

President Akufo-Addo made a number of statements, one of which was that corrupting society includes things like breaching norms and regulations, building without a permit, and paying police officers.

"It is important to keep in mind that the type of corruption that makes headlines, the kind that includes politicians and high-profile figures, is not the only type of corruption that slows down our progress and impedes our growth.

"In point of fact, it is about breaking norms and regulations in a variety of facets of our life, as well as wishing to and finding ways to get around the laws that are intended to direct our society.

"It has to do with driving recklessly, breaking every single traffic regulation, and attempting to bribe the police officer when you get pulled over," she said. "It's all connected." It has something to do with building a house without first obtaining the necessary permit. It entails turning a blind eye in the presence of wrongdoing by choosing to ignore the problem.

"It is related to the deterioration of our natural environment as well as the contamination of our air and water sources," she said. According to what he said, "it has to do with petty bribery and corruption as well as it has to do with bribery and corruption on a grand scale."

COUNTER-CULTURE

The President believes that people have a propensity to point fingers and whine about sleaze, despite the fact that there is a considerable number of Christians who could assist develop an alternative culture of honest dealings throughout countries.

He admonished the people of Christendom to be the "salt of the earth" as the Bible instructs them to be, therefore he asked the Christian community to get involved in the fight against the canker.

"It is impossible for Christians to afford to remain in the lower ranks. We have no choice but to put ourselves in the vanguard of those who still cling to the idea of a brighter future for our globe and do everything in our power to make that a reality.

While praising the FGBMI for hosting the conference, which helps Christians in their spiritual lives, President Akufo-Addo urged that Christians should demonstrate these values in their interactions with others outside of the church as well.

LEGISLATION

The President insisted that corruption was not something that was unique to Africa, but rather something that was a problem that many countries across the world were struggling with.

On the other hand, in his opinion, the fight against it ought to be based on legislative, financial, and institutional action, and "not just lip service."

He made the observation that countries that have been successful in combating the canker have done so by having a strong legal system that is supported by the rule of law, protecting the public purse, making institutional reforms, enacting additional laws that are required, and providing the accountability organs of the state with more adequate resources.

The world's largest Christian businessmen organisation hosted a conference in Ghana for the very first time in its entire 71-year history. The convention, which lasted for three days and had the subject "Empowered for Service," was the second event of its kind to be conducted in Africa. However, it was the first time that it was held in Ghana.

More than two thousand successful men and women in business from all over the world attended the conference. They discussed the most efficient ways to use their services to advance the economic development of their respective nations.
