Azumah Nelson is a Ghanaian former professional boxer who is widely considered one of the greatest African boxers of all time. He is a two-weight world champion, having held the WBC featherweight title from 1984 to 1987 and the WBC super-featherweight title twice between 1988 and 1997. He also challenged once for the unified WBC and IBF lightweight titles in 1990.

Nelson was born in Accra, Ghana, on July 19, 1958. He began boxing at a young age and quickly showed promise. In 1979, he turned professional and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1981, he won the ABU and Commonwealth featherweight titles.

In 1984, Nelson challenged Wilfredo Gomez for the WBC featherweight title. Gomez was considered one of the best boxers in the world at the time, but Nelson upset him by knocking him out in the 12th round. Nelson made two successful defenses of his title before losing it to Barry McGuigan in 1987.

Nelson moved up to the super-featherweight division in 1988 and won the WBC title by defeating Juan Laporte. He made 11 successful defenses of his title before losing it to Jesse James Leija in 1997.

Nelson retired from boxing in 2008 with a record of 38 wins, 6 losses, and 2 draws. He is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

Nelson's career was not without its challenges. He faced some of the best boxers in the world during his prime, and he had to overcome injuries and setbacks. However, he always showed resilience and determination. He was a master of the inside game, and he had a powerful punch. He was also a very intelligent boxer, and he was able to outthink his opponents.
