Jefferson Kwamina Sackey, who is running for the seat of Ablekuma Central in the National People's Party parliament, has stated that he felt a calling to become in politics.
The journalist, who is also the deputy communications director at the Jubilee house, remarked that the thought to run for the Ablekuma Central seat came to him one morning along with a message to serve his people. He is also a member of the Jubilee party.
"It was really a calling that came to me. It just hit me one morning, I had a message that said, "your people need you," and then it came with a message, and the message came with a message about new energy, and then I knew this was exactly what the message was all about, you know, to go to my people, find a way of communicating with them, listening to their plight through the political agenda which I have been serving all these years, and also get involved in active politics," he said on JoyNews' PM Express.
Jefferson Sackey mentioned that one of the primary reasons he is interested in pursuing a career in politics is due to the influence that he has seen effective policies have on the lives of average Ghanaians.
Mr. Sackey had travelled with the then-candidate Akufo-Addo as he campaigned across the country. Following the president's entry into office, Mr. Sackey continued to work with the president by hosting the president's diary.
"Well, I think it's been many years of working with somebody you admire who has served as a mentor to you," she said. Working alongside Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo throughout his time as foreign minister, observing his approach to politics, learning about his hopes and aspirations for this country, and ultimately leading to him deciding to run for office on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
"Remember the elections of 2007, the primaries, and then after that, resigning from the foreign ministry and joining him on the political campaign trail presenting Nana's Diary then, which was actually projecting the good policies of the then-John Agyekum Kufuor government, telling the stories of then-candidate Akufo-Addo, and all of that," Nana said. "Remember the primaries, and then after that, resigning from the foreign ministry."
"I think travelling across the country and seeing the plights of the people and how political power can change people's plight gave me the courage to think of the future and then find a very smooth way of transitioning from journalism to politics," he added. "I think travelling across the country is what gave me the courage to think of the future and then find a very smooth way of transitioning from journalism to politics."
Ahead of the NPP parliamentary primaries in orphan constituencies, he has already submitted his candidature form and has been engaging in conversation with delegates from the area.
"And so this is how the journey has started, and I think I have not regretted it, it has been amazing so far," he said. "And so this is how the journey has started."
