This past weekend, John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), paid a visit to the home of Haruna Iddrisu, the former leader of the Minority Party, in Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region, for a discussion behind closed doors.
Following a series of incidents that occurred in the past, there were rumours that the current President and the Member of Parliament for Tamale South had some sort of misunderstanding with one another. However, the visit seems to have dispelled those rumours.
Context
It is important to remember that in 2012, when then-President Mahama was forming his government after winning the election, he did not include Mr. Iddrisu, who is a loyal member of the party.
This new information, on the other hand, resulted in the outbreak of pandemonium, as certain members of the party staged vehement demonstrations and damaged party property. As a result, the President was compelled to award the man a ministerial job.
The public notion that there is conflict between the camps of the two party stalwarts was verified by a recent dramatic reshuffling of the leadership of the Minority in Parliament that was carried out by the leadership of the NDC.
After the most recent presidential primary, many people had the opinion that the apparent bickering that occurred between the two camps could get worse and cause a sharp rift inside the party.
However, the most recent evidence suggests that this is not the case.
Others believed that it may have had an effect on the fight to choose the party's flag bearer, even while many people believed that political opponents could use such a development to make further progress in the general election in 2024 by riding on such a development.
Visit
According to information obtained by The Daily Graphic, two stalwarts of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) met on Sunday, when the former President arrived in Tamale for some private engagements in the region.
In a video that has since gone viral on social media, Mr. Mahama, Mr. Iddrisu, and the former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, can be seen seated in Mr. Iddrisu's private apartment beaming with smiles at the camera.
After returning from Busunu earlier that evening, the previous President paid a call on Mr. Iddrisu at his residence.
"The element of surprise was the fact that the two of them were together at Mandari for the installation of Gilbert Iddi, a former Minister under the previous NDC administration," a highly placed source to the meeting informed the Daily Graphic. "The two of them were together at Mandari for the installation of Gilbert Iddi, a former Minister under the previous NDC administration."
It stated that there had never been any disagreements or disagreements between Mr. Iddrisu and the previous President.
"It is possible that people would have the erroneous impression about the existence of it, but whatever it is.
The visit not only strengthens their connection with one another but also puts an end to the harsh and vile rumours that they have different points of view from one another.
"Mr. Haruna Iddrisu has always been a JDM person and indeed a principal architect of his presidency," the insider said.
"Remember that in 2016, he got his highest vote from Tamale South, and in 2023, he gave him 100 per cent," the statement continued.
