Savannah area ministerexpresses concern over underage drug use
Drug abuse among Damongo youths in the Savannah area has become so rampant that the local minister is crying foul over its threat to security in the area.
Savannah Regional MinisterSaeed Muhazu Jibril lamentedthe high level of drug addictionamong young people in Damongo and surrounding areas. According to him, in the near future the city will see an increase in the number of people running into the streets of the regional capital if measures are not taken to stopthe threat.
Saeed said that many of the young people who filed the case find themselves in different joints of the "ghetto"smoking or sleeping after they have injected tramadol and other dangerous substances into their system. The Savannah regional minister said that drugs intended for children, such as teedar and paracetamol syrup, are being consumed in high quantities, including super glue and cold solutions, among the things that young people eat just to "get high".
However, he revealed that the capital's security forces are doing well in containing the situation. He said that the alarming rate of pollution,especially among young people,can be attributed to the high rate of unemployment among young people, the frustration of qualified students who do not have access to higher educationand the general economic situation in the country.
Saeed Muhazu Jibril said that marijuana has been recognizedas the drug most used by youth in Ghana. The age of marijuana abuse is young (10 to 12 years)and experiments have found itto be the main reason for the initiation of the abuse
