In a fervent exchange of words during their campaigns leading up to the NPP presidential race, Kennedy Agyapong, the Assin Central Member of Parliament, launched a scathing attack against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the Akufo- Addo/Bawumia government. His criticism centered around his dissatisfaction with the depreciation of the Cedi under their administration and their approach of seeking a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
During his campaign tour in Kintampo East on a Sunday, July 16, 2023, Kennedy Agyapong did not hold back, passionately expressing his frustration. He vehemently opposed the idea that those responsible for taking the NPP to the IMF for financial assistance should be the same individuals leading the party towards another term in power, effectively urging the NPP delegates to vote against Vice President Bawumia, one of his main contenders in the party' s impending primary.
Using strong language, Agyapong emphasized the need for a clean campaign, pledging to respond to any claims made against him. He also took a direct swipe at Vice President Bawumia, questioning his competency and strategy by highlighting the depreciation of the Cedi. In a heated remark, Agyapong reminded the audience that the exchange rate during the transition of power was GH¢4 to one US dollar, but now, it had risen to GH¢12 under their watch.
In response to Kennedy Agyapong' s verbal assault, Nana Akomea, another candidate in the NPP presidential race, chimed in. He referenced Agyapong' s previous statements endorsing Dr. Bawumia, wherein the Assin Central MP had expressed confidence in Bawumia' s capabilities and endorsed him as a suitable candidate for the party' s leadership.
