Cecilia Dapaah, the former minister of sanitation, has stated that "whereas I can state emphatically" that the figures mentioned in a newspaper report about some money stolen from her Abelemkpe residence by her househelps "do not represent correctly what my husband and I reported to the police," she is "very much aware of the import of such stories around someone in my position," which led to her decision to resign from her position as a result of the impact that such stories could have on her.

She stated in her resignation letter to the president, "I intend to cooperate fully with all state agencies to enable them to fully establish the facts." She continued, "I have no doubt whatsoever that at the end of the processes, it will be fully established that I have conducted myself with integrity during my period in public service and I will be fully exonerated from all the allegations that have filled the public domain in the past 24 hours."

The story was first reported by the daily The Chronicle, which stated that the quantities of money taken were one million dollars, three hundred thousand euros, and several millions of Ghana cedis.

Background

The issue was brought to light when two former househelps, Patience Botwe and Sarah Agyei, were accused with allegedly taking money and expensive items from the property of the former minister and her husband Daniel Osei Kuffour. The money and valuable items were stolen from the residence of the former minister and her husband.

Other things, such as jewellery, clothing, and personal goods, were taken in addition to the different sums of cash that were taken.

Patience, the prime suspect, is the one who is being charged with the theft of kente cloth and men's clothing that belonged to Daniel Osei Kuffour. These items were taken from his home.

Additionally, three additional people, namely Benjamin, Kweku Botwe, and Malik Dauda, were accused with dishonestly obtaining portions of the stolen money. These charges were brought against them by the government.

On July 20, 2023, the accused were taken before a court in Accra that was part of the Circuit Court. The presiding judge was Susana Ekuful.

Despite this, their pleadings have not been heard as of yet.

Due to the fact that Sarah is a breastfeeding mother, the judge has decided to release her from custody on bail in the amount of one million Ghana cedis, provided that she has two sureties. The remaining individuals who have been accused have been remanded into jail.

The records of the court indicate that the defendants, Patience and Sarah, previously worked for the complainants as house helps, and the alleged thefts occurred between July and October of 2022.

After realising that they were short cash and valuables, the victims informed the authorities that they had been victims of theft.

During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that Patience had gained entry to the couple's chamber by using a forged key, and Mr. Kuffour had spotted her hiding behind the door.

After some time had passed, it was noticed that the objects that had been stolen were gone.

Later, Patience was detained, but after being freed on police bail, she fled to Tamale with her boyfriend, Benjamin, and went into hiding there.

Patience and Benjamin were eventually captured by the police in Tamale, where they were found to be in possession of considerable sums of money as well as valuables that had been stolen.

Patience is accused of using some of the stolen money to purchase a home in Amrahia with three bedrooms and then outfitting the home with brand new furnishings.

Patience implicated Sarah by disclosing that the two of them had worked together in the couple's house while she was being questioned by the police.

Sarah would be able to sneak into the room and grab something while Patience kept watch at the main gate.

The next court date for this case will be August 2, 2023, so the proceedings have been postponed until then.
