Ghana' s minister in charge of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah has been trending for the past 24 hours. The minister has come under a barrage of attacks after it was revealed that she and her husband are in court seeking the court to retrieve monies that a house help and other accomplices stole from them. Many have questioned why a minister could have as much as a million dollars in her home at a time that many Ghanaians are wallowing in poverty.
The house help alongside other accomplices are standing trial for theft. According the ongoing trial, about a million dollars has been stolen as well as 300, 000 Euros, clothes and bags valued at 95, 000 cedis, jewelries worth 95, 000 cedis, 6 pieces of kente valued at 90, 000, 350, 000 cedis and 6 sets of men' s suit valued at$3000.
The minister after so much backlash resigned within 24 hours after the story started trending. She cited her reason for resigning as her quest not to tarnish the Akufo- Addo led government during these precarious times. Well, President Akufo- Addo has received and accepted the resignation of Cecilia Dapaah. The President thanked her for her services to the country and went further to applaud her for her loyalty to the nation. He then wished her well in her further endeavors.
The communique issued by Eugene Arhin also stated that the President will soon appoint a new minister to take charge of the Sanitation and Water Resources ministry. Despite the resignation, many Ghanaians feel the minister should be investigated and prosecuted if she is found guilty of hoarding money at her residence.
Many are also amazed at the posture of the president in not sacking the minister but rather waiting on the latter to first tender her resignation. President Akufo- Addo has often been criticized for failing to sack his underperforming minister. Many await to see what the President will do next in relation to what should be done to the minister.
